This is the first large public company in Japan and Korea to buy cryptocurrency as part of its treasury. It maintains over 50 titles\u2014including hits like MapleStory and Crazyracing Kartrider\u2014in distribution at present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexon was previously rumored to be among the forerunners to purchase crypto exchange Bitstamp.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Stacking Bitcoin<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm said it picked up 1,717 bitcoins for approximately $100 million (\u00a511.1 billion) at an average price of approximately $58,226 (\u00a56,446,183) per bitcoin, inclusive of fees and expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purchase represented less than 2% of Nexon\u2019s total cash and cash equivalents on hand, the firm added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Owen Mahoney, president and CEO of Nexon, explained that Bitcoin \u201coffered long-term stability and liquidity\u201d in the current economic environment while maintaining the value of the company\u2019s cash for future investments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur purchase of bitcoin reflects a disciplined strategy for protecting shareholder value and for maintaining the purchasing power of our cash assets,\u201d he stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">5\/ my friend, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/owenmahoney?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@owenmahoney<\/a>, ceo @ Nexon, has been a longtime proponent of bitcoin, and we&#39;ve had many long chats about SoV use case of BTC, game currencies, and NFTs.  look out for more curious founders and CEOs who bring their personal exploration to benefit their companies! ?<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; steve jang (@stevejang) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stevejang\/status\/1387225970147356672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 28, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><b>Footsteps<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The comments are similar to those made by electric carmaker Tesla and business analytics firm MicroStrategy in the past year, who have each <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tesla-sells-272m-of-bitcoin-but-elon-musk-is-still-hodling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invested billions of dollars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the pioneer cryptocurrency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firms say traditional instruments like low-yield bonds and cash are not great stores-of-value anymore, given the rampant money printing and the oncoming effects of overinflation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin, for them on the other hand, represents an asset class just winging out of its nest\u2014with its fixed 21 million supply meaning an increase in the number of coins is a technical impossibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Nexon\u2019s move comes amidst greater scrutiny of cryptocurrencies in markets like Japan and South Korea. The former has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coronavirus-pushes-bitcoin-friendly-japan-to-begin-digital-yen-trials\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weighed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">friendly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to embrace developments, but the latter is throwing mixed signals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CryptoSlate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extensively reported, some Korean ministers are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/korean-minister-says-all-200-crypto-exchanges-in-the-country-face-a-risk-of-closing-down\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposing closing down non-compliant crypto exchanges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (there are over 200 of them in the country), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/south-korea-aims-to-pay-special-attention-to-bitcoin-and-crypto-transactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taxing traders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and requiring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/koreas-financial-watchdog-orders-employees-to-disclose-crypto-holdings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ministers to declare capital gains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned on crypto investments.
