And tech CEOs want in on the action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Enter Shopify yields?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week saw Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke turn to crypto circles on Twitter to ask proponents about how the e-commerce technology site could help build in DeFi. \u201cWhat are the commerce-related opportunities that you are most excited about? What role do you want Shopify to play?\u201d Lutke tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hey <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DeFi?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DeFi<\/a> Twitter?. What are the commerce related opportunities that you are most excited about? What role do you want Shopify to play?<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tobi Lutke ???? (@tobi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tobi\/status\/1378116793370349569?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 2, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Answers ranged from memes to serious replies suggesting the interplay of cryptocurrencies and working capital loans for small businesses and entrepreneurs. \u201cAn equivalent of PayPal or Stripe working capital loans, but orchestrated thru Shopify and via existing Defi loan providers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/en\/coins\/aave\">Aave<\/a>,\u201d suggested Brian Krogsgard, host of crypto podcast UpOnly.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As an example of something I think could be amazing&#8230; an equivalent of PayPal or Stripe working capital loans, but orchestrated thru Shopify and via existing Defi loan providers like <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AaveAave?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AaveAave<\/a>. Would empower productive loans in a non-fully collateralized manner but narrow focus.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ledger Status (@ledgerstatus) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ledgerstatus\/status\/1378173246525308931?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 3, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blockchain\/terra\/\">Terra<\/a> founder Do Kwon suggested taking the yield route for benefiting users. \u201c(A) 20% yield on the settlement buffer as it is waiting to be distributed to merchant partners? Earnings can be split merchant \/ Shopify to align incentives,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other popular responses included suggestions of having merchants commit a set percentage of all Shopify-verified revenue to an Ethereum address they controlled, which in turn, could be staked to generate yield.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>NFTs, Bitcoin, and why not to DeFi\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, were not far behind in the mentions. The formerly niche crypto sector has grown into a $22 billion behemoth over the past months, and proponents suggested merchants could \u2018airdrop\u2019 their store-focused NFTs to buyers and other users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some users even mentioned the use of Bitcoin on Shopify services as well. Stacks CEO Muneeb Ali said the e-commerce business could allow users to earn Bitcoin on their purchases. \u201cThere are BTC yielding products in DeFi now,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/muneeb\/status\/1378142165335994368\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Lutke's tweet did attract some criticism as well. Tom Kineshanko, founder of tokenized crypto fund Protos Asset Management, said a centralized company trying to integrate DeFi services felt \u201ckinda wrong.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGut reaction: \u2018I (love) Shopify but it feels kinda wrong a centralized co to touch my precious decentralized DeFi\u2019 &#8211; please think about the wonders & inequality reducing the potential of decentralization as you begin,\u201d Kineshanko said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lutke, however, was quick to respond to that: \u201cShopify is a product of pre-crypto times and spiritually aligned with decentralizing opportunity,\u201d he noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Shopify is a product of pre-crypto times and spiritually aligned with decentralizing opportunity.
