{"id":185836,"date":"2021-04-02T03:00:09","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T02:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=185836"},"modified":"2021-04-02T03:07:01","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T02:07:01","slug":"morgan-stanley-approves-bitcoin-investments-for-dozen-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/morgan-stanley-approves-bitcoin-investments-for-dozen-funds\/","title":{"rendered":"Morgan Stanley approves Bitcoin investments for a dozen new funds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>American investment bank <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-bank-morgan-stanley-to-launch-three-bitcoin-funds\/\">Morgan Stanley<\/a> plans to allow a dozen of its funds to invest in <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> via cash-settled futures and the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/why-is-grayscales-bitcoin-trust-gbtc-trading-at-a-discount\/\">GBTC<\/a>), according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/0000836487\/000110465921044979\/a21-8652_27497.htm\">filing<\/a> with the Securities and Exchange Commission published yesterday.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCertain Funds may have exposure to bitcoin indirectly through cash settled futures or indirectly through investments in Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (BTC) (\u201cGBTC\u201d), a privately offered investment vehicle that invests in bitcoin,\u201d said the filing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The bank also noted that investments in Bitcoin, be it via futures or GBTC, will be organized through its wholly-owned subsidiary\u2014\u201can exempted company under the laws of the Cayman Islands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its filing, Morgan Stanley listed 12 funds that it plans to expose to Bitcoin, including Advantage Portfolio, Asia Opportunity Portfolio, Counterpoint Global Portfolio, Developing Opportunity Portfolio, Global Advantage Portfolio, Global Opportunity Portfolio, and others.<\/p>\n<h2>Assessing the risks<\/h2>\n<p>At the same time, the bank also highlighted Bitcoin\u2019s notorious volatility and pointed out that exposure to crypto might present some serious risks.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe value of a Fund's investments in cryptocurrency is subject to fluctuations in the value of the cryptocurrency, which have been and may in the future be highly volatile,\u201d the document stressed, adding, \u201cThe price of bitcoin could drop precipitously (including to zero) for a variety of reasons.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Further, there is also a chance that funds exposed to Bitcoin could suffer \u201csubstantial losses,\u201d the bank explained. Therefore, only clients and companies with a considerable net worth will be allowed to access the new offerings thanks to their \u201caggressive risk tolerance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thus, only clients that have at least $2 million in assets held by Morgan Stanley will be able to get exposure to Bitcoin. For investment companies, the minimum requirement will amount to $5 million.<\/p>\n<p>A report has also recently suggested that Morgan Stanley is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/morgan-stanley-reportedly-looks-to-acquire-stake-in-korean-exchange-bithumb\/\">in talks to acquire a stake<\/a> in the top South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb.
