They\u2019re not backed by anything. They\u2019re more of an asset for speculation.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WATCH LIVE: Fed Chair Jerome Powell speaks at Bank of International Settlements event \u2014 3\/22\/21\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G5bVtzQt4Uc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, he also pointed out that instead of competing with fiat, Bitcoin is currently moving into the territory of gold. He added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt's essentially a substitute for gold rather than for the dollar.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At the same time, he acknowledged that <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cryptos\/stablecoin\">stablecoins<\/a>\u2014crypto tokens pegged to real-world currencies\u2014are \u201can improvement\u201d over crypto assets.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTo an extent, a stablecoin is backed by sovereign currencies of leading nations, that is certainly an improvement over crypto assets, I would say,\u201d Powell noted, adding, \u201cBut nonetheless, where does the credibility come from? It comes from that sovereign currency that is the backstop.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Earlier today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-22\/federal-reserve-s-digital-dollar-momentum-worries-wall-street\"><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/a> reported that the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are getting ready to reveal the results of their research into central bank digital currencies (CBDCs)\u2014or a \u201cdigital dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about CBDCs today, Powell explained that the Fed potentially could develop one in the future, but it would require strict regulation, a lot of research, and a careful review\u2014just like any other stablecoin.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cStablecoins may have a role to play with appropriate regulation, but that role will not be to form the basis of a new global monetary system,\u201d Powell said. \u201cA global currency governed by the incentives of a private company is something that will deserve and will receive the highest level of regulatory expectations.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As <i>CryptoSlate<\/i> reported, Powell has recently also stated that CBDCs can <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-federal-reserve-says-digital-currencies-can-coexist-with-cash\/\">function alongside fiat money<\/a> in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are \u201cnot backed by anything,\u201d they are still capable of serving as a \u201csubstitute for gold,\u201d Jerome Powell, chairman of the United States Federal Reserve, stated today.
