The latest firm looking for a piece of NFT action is popular bi-weekly news publication TIME.<\/p>\n<h2>TIME Magazine puts up three limited edition NFTs for auction<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5948741\/time-nft-covers\/?utm_source=reddit.com\">TIME NFTs<\/a> feature two iconic covers and one specifically made for the NFT auction. Consistent with the magazine's M.O, all three covers provoke thought and controversy in parallel.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cIs God Dead?\u201d featured on the April 8, 1966, cover &#8211; a time when theology carried significantly more weight than today. As expected, maybe even hoped for, it stirred a rousing response from both ends of the belief spectrum.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The cover inspired countless angry sermons, 3,421 letters from readers and a lively debate at a time when 97% of Americans told pollsters they believed in God.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a similar vein, TIME\u2019s April 3, 2017 cover posed the question, \u201cIs Truth Dead?\u201d concerning Donald Trump's first year of presidency. Trump's tenure is dubbed the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/fixgov\/2018\/03\/20\/comparing-trump-to-the-greatest-and-the-most-polarizing-presidents-in-u-s-history\/\">polarizing<\/a> in U.S. history.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_184940\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-184940\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-184940 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Capture-3.png\" alt=\"TIME Magazine NFTs\" width=\"1000\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Capture-3.png 1000w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Capture-3-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Capture-3-768x345.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-184940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5948741\/time-nft-covers\/?utm_source=reddit.com\">time.com<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Is Fiat Dead?&#8221; maintains this theme with satisfying consistency. But this time applied to what is perhaps the most pressing question of these times. TIME Creative Director D.W. Pine commented on the duality it communicates, saying this is comparable to the controversy elicited by NFTs.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I love the idea that it\u2019s meaning isn\u2019t clear to the casual viewer \u2013 much like the crazy, lucrative world of NFTs.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The TIME NFTs are available to buy via the SuperRare platform. The virtual hammer will fall at 8ET on March 24. At the time of writing, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/superrare.co\/artwork-v2\/time-is-fiat-dead-21652\">Is Fiat Dead?<\/a>&#8221; leads the pack with a 20ETH (approximately $36k) bid, with the other two covers currently at 10 ETH a piece.<\/p>\n<h2>There's no such thing as negative press<\/h2>\n<p>NFTs have existed for several years, but it wasn't until recently that the world began to pay attention. The tipping point came after <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/beeple-nft-sold-for-69-million-is-the-fourth-most-expensive-artwork-sold-by-a-living-artist\/\">Beeple's The First 5000 Days<\/a> sold via Christie's for an unbelievable $69.3mn earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Beeple, AKA Mike Winkelmann, said digital art had been a thing for at least the last two decades. However, there was never a way to own and collect them before NFTs came along.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;With NFTs that has now changed. I believe we are witnessing the beginning of the next chapter in art history, digital art.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By his admission, and perhaps in response to the staggering price achieved by The First 5000 Days, Winkelmann <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-21\/prices-in-a-bubble-beeple-says-after-his-69-million-nft-sale\">conceded<\/a> that NFTs are in a bubble.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I absolutely think it\u2019s a bubble, to be quite honest. I go back to the analogy of the beginning of the internet. There was a bubble. And the bubble burst.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The problem is, no-one knows when the bubble will pop.
