The latest of these attacks took place earlier today and saw over $14 million worth of stolen crypto.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Furucombo attacked<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furucombo, an <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a>-based transaction \u201cbatching\u201d protocol, said this morning that the platform had been exploited and asked all users to cease all approvals as caution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tool is built for end-users to optimize their DeFi strategy by using a simple \u2018drag and drop\u2019 mechanism. The tool allows users who don\u2019t know how to code but understand DeFi markets to create and run their own strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protocol saw an exploit this morning. \u201cWe have deauthorized the relevant components and believe the vulnerability to be patched but we recommend users remove approvals out of an abundance of caution,\u201d Furucombo said in a tweet.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are working on the next steps and will update our community as soon as we can<\/p>\n<p>Please remove your token approvals on <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jcZmbiUQOR\">https:\/\/t.co\/jcZmbiUQOR<\/a> towards our contract at the earliest.<\/p>\n<p>Our smart contract:0x17e8Ca1b4798B97602895f63206afCd1Fc90Ca5f<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; FURUCOMBO (@furucombo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/furucombo\/status\/1365743633605959681?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 27, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per The Block researcher Igor Igamberdiev, the attacker was able to conduct the exploit by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tricking <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furucombo\u2019s smart contracts to trust and process a fake dataset belong to a decentralized lending service Aave\u2014a protocol that allows users to take out loans via collateral (or flash loans with no collateral).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cAn attacker using a fake contract made Furu\u0441ombo think that Aave v2 has a new implementation, said Igamberdiev in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FrankResearcher\/status\/1365740713334493192\">tweet<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He added that this reason caused all interactions with \u201cAave v2\u201d to be \u201capproved\u201d and sent to an address controlled by the hacker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On-chain data further shows that the attacker transferred the funds of every user who had \u2018approved\u2019 Furucombo to conduct transactions on their behalf, resulting in over $14 million getting stolen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 3,900 stETH (a staked Ethereum token) and $2.4 million in stablecoin USDC were the biggest bags hit. The attacker\/s have been transferring their illicitly-gained stash to privacy mixer Tornado Cash, a tool that masks addresses and allows users to swap cryptocurrencies on-chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Taking responsibility<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hsuan-Ting, the CEO of crypto exchange Dinngo, the firm that builds and maintains Furucombo, said the firm takes responsibility for getting attack and asked users to not \u201cworry about any of their losses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are calculating how much is lost and planning what is the mitigation plan,\u201d Hsuan-Ting said, adding:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>\u201cWill keep everyone posted. Together we are stronger.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Curve Finance\u2019s Julien Bouteloup said on Twitter that such \u201cevil contract\u201d exploits were seemingly the new \u201choly grail.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cevil contract\u201d exploit is the new DeFi Holy Grail?<\/p>\n<p>=  a contract that fools the protocol into believing it is an existing &quot;safe&quot; contract<\/p>\n<p>Furucombo got fooled with this new contract thinking it was aave v2 stuff. And top users with infinite allowance got rekt&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;$13.5M lost <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/s03egtRO7w\">pic.twitter.com\/s03egtRO7w<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Julien Bouteloup (@bneiluj) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bneiluj\/status\/1365765917314068490?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 27, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was likely referring to previous attacks on Alpha Finance and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/how-yfi-competitor-pickle-finance-was-exploited-for-20m-in-ethereum-stablecoins\/\">Pickle Finance<\/a> <\/span>that saw a similar \u201cevil contract\u201d drain millions of dollars in cryptocurrencies by tricking the protocols into approving and accepting fake contracts.
