On Monday, the price of Ethereum (ETH) briefly dropped by over 50%\u2014from around $1,600 to $700\u2014on crypto exchange Kraken, prompting numerous debates on whether this was some kind of technical malfunction.<\/p>\n

However, the dip wasn\u2019t an error and could have been caused by a whale trader, the platform\u2019s CEO Jesse Powell told Bloomberg<\/i><\/a> today.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in the process of investigating. There doesn\u2019t seem to be any evidence of a trading-engine malfunction. It seems like trades processed accurately,\u201d Powell said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He explained that users\u2019 losses could have potentially been amplified by the availability of margin trading on Kraken\u2014a practice where customers use funds borrowed from a broker to trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt could be that a single whale just decided to dump his life savings,\u201d Powell added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

On February 22, ETH\u2019s drop was part of the massive crypto market\u2019s decline as Bitcoin (BTC) alone plunged by roughly $10,000\u2014its biggest daily dip so far. However, Ethereum\u2019s price didn\u2019t fall nearly as low on other major exchanges that day, trading at around $1,500.<\/p>\n

Whatever the case may be, it is unlikely that Kraken would retrospectively cancel any of the trades conducted on Monday, Powell noted, but \u201csome\u201d compensation to the affected traders may ensue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe may end up doing something for these people. We\u2019re looking into it,\u201d Powell added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Still, the cryptocurrency market remains a risky and volatile place, so traders should be prepared to lose money.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s still a bit of the Wild West. You still have to do your own research and learn how things work, and you\u2019re kind of trading on professional mode on many of these venues,\u201d Powell concluded.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
