Analysts had noted that there was a strong influx of Ethereum longs this past year. It reached a point where there was a material amount of ETH (over 1.5 percent of the circulating supply) locked up in Bitfinex longs.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24ETH&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$ETH<\/a> ppl longing their longs on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bitfinex?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bitfinex<\/a> by the looks of it<\/p>\n<p>new ATH for long OI <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tOk5F2LI1U\">pic.twitter.com\/tOk5F2LI1U<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Josh Olszewicz (@CarpeNoctom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CarpeNoctom\/status\/1329233699985104896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 19, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Some thought it was a glitch, though according to analysts, those positions in the second-largest cryptocurrency were legit. Equally as interesting, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-whale-accumulation-trend-on-bitfinex-shows-14k-or-lower-isnt-likely\/\">Bitfinex<\/a> whale that opened this position has begun to claim its position.<\/p>\n<h2>Large Ethereum long is being closed by a whale<\/h2>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lightcrypto\/status\/1347953571426308096\">noted<\/a> by crypto-asset analyst &#8220;Light,&#8221; the $1.7 billion long opened on Bitfinex by an unknown entity has started to shrink over the past few days via what is known as a &#8220;claim.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A claim on Bitfinex is when a margin trade is converted into an exchange trade, meaning the cost to borrow capital is settled to the lender.<\/p>\n<p>The long was opened starting in February and March, suggesting that this investor has been bullish on Ethereum since it was trading under $200 early in 2020. At the current price of $1,200, this investor is up by over $1 billion on this position.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">~1.4MM ETH ($1.7B) long claimed on BitFinex. Was being built since Feb-March. Majority of the size was put on sub $200, over $1B in pnl.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting time to close 1 month before CME futures and launch and below ATH but at $1200 level of interest. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZUMmHyGvoq\">pic.twitter.com\/ZUMmHyGvoq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; light (@lightcrypto) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lightcrypto\/status\/1347953571426308096?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 9, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This position being claimed comes at an interesting time, as Light notes.<\/p>\n<p>In February, the CME is expected to release CFTC-regulated futures for the Ethereum market. This will represent one of the first times institutions will be able to obtain meaningful exposure to Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, analysts have argued that this is decisively bullish for the ETH price. As analyst and economist <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/alex-kruger\/\">Alex Kr\u00fcger<\/a> explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPeople mostly remember how bitcoin hit its top on 2017 the exact day the CME $BTC futures launched, and proceeded to crash right after. They forget that the CME launch drove price from 6K to 20K, +225% in 2.5 months. The launch of CME $ETH futures is extremely bullish.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the other side of that coin, though, analysts note that the market is clearly in a phase of euphoria, with the price action exceeding what many believed was possible just months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/billionaire-michael-novogratz-weighs-in-on-facebooks-libra-and-bitcoin\/\">Michael Novogratz<\/a>, the CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/galaxy-digital\/\">Galaxy Digital<\/a>\u00a0and a former\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/goldman-sachs\/\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/mike-novogratz-thinks-the-bitcoin-price-could-correct-after-gaining-100-in-weeks\/\">said<\/a> that Bitcoin is primed to pull back after the 100 percent rally over the past four weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;ve been on Crypto Twitter any time over the past year, you&#8217;ve likely seen much discussion about Bitfinex&#8217;s Ethereum market.
