{"id":175688,"date":"2020-11-11T18:43:04","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T18:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=175688"},"modified":"2022-03-11T19:40:18","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T19:40:18","slug":"ethereum-accidentally-hard-forks-after-infura-outrage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereum-accidentally-hard-forks-after-infura-outrage\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethereum accidentally \u201chard forks\u201d after Infura outage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The decentralized world computer was hit by the reality of having a single point of failure earlier today after an Ethereum client failed to update its software version.<\/p>\n<p>Infura, an <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\">Ethereum<\/a> service provider run and maintained by <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/consensys\/\">ConsenSys<\/a>, suffered a service outage this morning causing other services and companies to be temporarily blocked from seeing the network\u2019s data.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">(1\/2) Ok, so what happened today on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ethereum?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Ethereum<\/a>?:<\/p>\n<p>1. At some point Ethereum developers introduced a change in the code that led today to a chain split starting from block 11234873 (07:08 UTC)<\/p>\n<p>2. Those who haven\u2019t upgraded (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Blockchair?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Blockchair<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/infura_io?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@infura_io<\/a>, some miners, and many others)\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mbRYFU5tgn\">pic.twitter.com\/mbRYFU5tgn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nikita Zhavoronkov (@nikzh) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nikzh\/status\/1326465592841351168?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 11, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The bug affected a version of the Ethereum blockchain, Geth, and as per <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ethereum-foundation\/\">Ethereum Foundation<\/a> team lead P\u00e9ter Szil\u00e1gyi, had been lying dormant for two years. This means while other providers had updated their nodes, Infura ran without the required updates.<\/p>\n<p>The service outrage caused a temporary hard fork in the Ethereum network \u2014 meaning it split into two and had parallel blockchains running with different data. Szil\u00e1gyi noted in a tweet:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTechnically&#8230;it was an &#8220;unannounced hard fork&#8221; (from a bad chain to the good one). That said, silently fixing a bug dormant for 2+ years has a much lower chance of causing a disruption than raising awareness to it. We strive to minimize potential damage.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Technically you are correct that it was an &quot;unannounced hard fork&quot; (from a bad chain to the good one). However, neither they nor Infura made any public statements regarding the specifics of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Nikita Zhavoronkov, the lead Ethereum developer at Blockchair, said of the incident:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn my opinion, today\u2019s consensus failure in #EthereumUnicorn face shouldn\u2019t be underestimated and should be considered as the most serious issue Ethereum has faced since the DAO debacle 4 years ago. An investigation is in order.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He referred to Ethereum\u2019s infamous DAO hack in 2016, when the network was newly formed. Users <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/06\/50-million-hack-just-showed-dao-human\/\">lost over $50 million<\/a> at the time, but the network somehow shed it off and grew into the second-largest blockchain project in the following years.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to CryptoSlate, Strongblock CEO David Moss added about the vulnerability:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This is proof that StrongBlock's mission to reward nodes is crucial to securing the Ethereum blockchain.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Businesses running Ethereum nodes took steps to minimize any long-lasting impact shortly after the chain split was discovered. Binance, which runs a node, tweeted in the morning:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There was a possible ETH chain split at block 11234873. Etherscan and Blockchair are showing two different chains and data after this block. We\u2019re resolving now but have temporarily closed withdrawals.
