{"id":174372,"date":"2020-10-20T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T11:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=174372"},"modified":"2020-11-12T21:56:31","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T21:56:31","slug":"heres-how-uniswaps-token-launch-has-driven-sushiswap-to-irrelevancy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/heres-how-uniswaps-token-launch-has-driven-sushiswap-to-irrelevancy\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s how Uniswap\u2019s token launch has driven SushiSwap to irrelevancy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the course of the recent decentralized finance bull run, SushiSwap was one of the favored platforms amongst investors and farmers, as users could buy Sushi tokens and farm massive yields while also trading on a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/uniswap\/\">Uniswap<\/a>-forked DEX.<\/p>\n<p>The platform took a major hit towards the end of the DeFi hype cycle, however, and Sushi prices plummeted after the creator \u2013 who went by the pseudonym Chef Nomi \u2013 sold his entire stake in the project in one go.<\/p>\n<p>This struck a serious blow to the platform, which was further compounded by weakness seen throughout the aggregated market.<\/p>\n<p>The lethal blow to SushiSwap, however, came about when Uniswap announced the release of the UNI governance token.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since \u2013 despite its early success \u2013 SushiSwap has seen a relentless decline in its TVL, liquidity, and trading volume, which is now dwarfed by that of Uniswap.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Uniswap\u2019s UNI token launch strikes a deadly blow to SushiSwap<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Last month, Uniswap made headlines when they conducted one of the fairest and farthest-reaching token distributions ever, granting everyone who had ever used the Uniswap platform partial ownership over it via an airdrop.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of users received $400 tokens, which at one point shortly after its launch, were worth as much as $3,400.<\/p>\n<p>Before UNI, users who wanted governance rights over a DEX were mainly utilizing SushiSwap, which was offering massive yields that attracted swarms of return-hungry farmers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/sushiswap\/\">SushiSwap<\/a> was launched via a Uniswap fork that has been widely deemed a \u201cvampire attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It failed to maintain its liquidity following the successful launch, a trend that the research platform <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/messari\/\">Messari<\/a> spoke about in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MessariCrypto\/status\/1318229445581430798\">a recent tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn Q3, Uniswap fended off a brazen &#8220;vampire attack&#8221; from SushiSwap. SushiSwap forked the popular AMM, added $SUSHI as an LP incentive, and hatched a plan to port over Uniswap's liquidity. After a successful launch, SushiSwap failed to retain liquidity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174373\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174373\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-174373 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Messari-1024x536.png\" alt=\"Uniswap SushiSwap UNI\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Messari-1024x536.png 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Messari-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Messari-768x402.png 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Messari.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Courtesy of Messari<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t the end of SushiSwap\u2019s woes, as a general lack of interest, which was compounded by community drama, all came about just weeks before the launch of the UNI token.<\/p>\n<p>Messari also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MessariCrypto\/status\/1318229447082971138\">notes that<\/a> the TVL and trading volume on the platform nosedived following UNI\u2019s launch, which has resulted in SushiSwap only seeing 15% of the volume seen by Uniswap.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSushiSwap's TVL and volumes dropped further once Uniswap launched its UNI token, eliminating one of SushiSwap's core value props.
