(<em>Source<\/em>: Blockchain.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>A pro-Monero statement<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hackers altered the recipient wallet addresses to include personalized alphanumeric keys, choosing to go with the pro-Monero stance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monero is a private cryptocurrency famed for masking wallet and transactional information. This is unlike Bitcoin or most others\u2014whose pseudonymous nature allows analytics firms to trace wallet activity to individual users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of the Monero forum on Reddit seemed pumped with the mention. \u201cAll those Bitcoins will be washed clean with Monero,\u201d said one user <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Monero\/comments\/hrxa38\/this_just_popped_up_on_the_twitter_hackers\/\">on a relevant thread<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it was strategic. More people have BTC than XMR. It also isn\u2019t easy to figure out how to use Monero, not entry-level crypto,\u201d said another user on another <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/CryptoCurrency\/comments\/hrzbzz\/twitter_hacker_who_famously_hacked_barrack_obama\/\">thread<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Monero's Riccardo Spagni tried explaining why the hackers asked for Bitcoin instead of XMR. His tweet was a response to a relevant comment thread:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bitcoin is a billion times easier to buy than Monero. It has a name that is instantly recognisable, where most of the people that saw the Tweets would never have heard of Monero. Bitcoin addresses are significantly shorter than Monero addresses, leading to more space in Tweets.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Riccardo Spagni (@fluffypony) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fluffypony\/status\/1283664309256687616?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Spagni pointed out Ripple's account <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fluffypony\/status\/1283664967607164929\">was similarly breached<\/a> as well, but the lack of outreach meant zero <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/news\/xrp\/\">XRP<\/a> was eventually sent to the hacker-provided XRP wallet address.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Twitter breach revealed a lack of privacy for influential accounts. If misused, it could mean many drastic consequences than a simple Bitcoin scam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On-chain analytics firm <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/chainalysis\/\">Chainalysis<\/a> is tracking the Bitcoin funds, approx. $120,000 at current rates. As of now, the scam\u2019s main BTC address (bc1&#8230;0wlh) received ~$120k in donations in 375 transactions. No funds have been cashed out at exchanges yet. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Jg9og3CFCz\">pic.twitter.com\/Jg9og3CFCz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Chainalysis (@chainalysis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chainalysis\/status\/1283576349630836737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Industry heads speak up<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As CryptoSlate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/twitter-pages-of-kanye-west-elon-musk-jeff-bezos-and-apple-share-bitcoin-scam\/\">reported earlier today<\/a>, popular Twitter accounts were compromised to send out Bitcoin-centric scam messages like donating to \u201cCryptoForHealth\u201d or receiving a \u201cgenerous\u201d gift from power users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Twitter infiltration was more of a statement than a money grab anyway. Hackers made north of 12 Bitcoin (approx. $118,000)\u2014a small amount considering the widespread extent of the vulnerability. <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/binance\/\">Binance<\/a>, Gemini, Vitalik Buterin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?rlz=1C1OKWM_enIN851IN851&sxsrf=ALeKk00ZJpAqGCCXelaNA3Qa9KiSeLKh7Q:1594894009080&q=coinbase+crypto+slate&spell=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjLjPaWw9HqAhV5zzgGHVgXCNgQkeECKAB6BAgNECc\">Coinbase<\/a>, Ripple, and a host of other crypto-centric, influential accounts saw their Twitter accounts hacked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dmitro Volkov, CTO at crypto exchange CEX.io told CryptoSlate:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now there are discussions among the community regarding the following version of events &#8211; the hacking could have been conducted by employees inside Twitter. But this is just talk between market participants, and there is no definitive proof at the moment.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The small result is quite fortunate and reflects quite favorably on battle-hardened crypto users, many of whom by now are experienced in fending off social engineering attacks and other forms of hacks and scams,&#8221; said Matthew Graham, the CEO of Sino Global Capital.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Twitter was hacked.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin has never been hacked.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Pomp ? (@APompliano) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/APompliano\/status\/1283560876256178176?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outrage was not limited to crypto celebrities. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elon Musk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Joe Biden, Kayne West, Mike Bloomberg, Kim Kardashian, and even <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill Gates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were affected. The gist was similar: Donating some Bitcoin to a given address with the allure of doubling the stash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Several prominent figures in the crypto sector have since commented on the matter. American Congressman Tom Emmer seemed to take a pro-Bitcoin stance while calling out centralized companies on the matter:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bitcoin isn&#39;t the problem. Centralized control is.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tom Emmer (@RepTomEmmer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepTomEmmer\/status\/1283560177489379330?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Leong of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/btse\/\">BTSE<\/a> told CryptoSlate:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;The widespread awareness and discussion of this scam was a silver lining. Had they scammers not attack so many high profile accounts, it is possible that most people would be not aware of this scam, and that there would be more victims.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issued an apology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and said they are investigating the matter.
