{"id":137680,"date":"2020-06-27T20:50:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-27T19:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=137680"},"modified":"2022-07-15T15:03:52","modified_gmt":"2022-07-15T14:03:52","slug":"crypto-com-suspends-debit-card-program-after-wirecard-bankruptcy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-com-suspends-debit-card-program-after-wirecard-bankruptcy\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto.com temporarily suspends European debit card program after Wirecard bankruptcy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crypto.com is temporarily suspending its Europe and U.K. issuances of MCO debit cards after its former card operator \u2014 Germany\u2019s Wirecard AG \u2014 slipped into bankruptcy and filed insolvency this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Hong Kong-based company will now find a new card operator to commence its card business again <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 one of the largest in the crypto-ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Crypto.com clients in other regions, apart from the Europe and U.K., have not been affected.<\/p>\n<h2><b>EU roadblock<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.crypto.com\/our-statement-regarding-wirecard-uk\/\">blog<\/a> Friday, Crypto.com said they were requested by authorities to cease all card programs in the U.K. and Europe, after an FCA investigation on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers in the two regions cannot top-up or transact using their MCO cards as of June 26. The stoppage is not limited to Crypto.com; other Wirecard\u2019s virtual card clients like ApplePay and Google are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-53198409\">confirmed<\/a> to have been affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The release said all customer funds are safe and pending credits will be processed to respective crypto accounts within the next 48 hours (at the time). All balances will be calculated from the fiat amount held on the cards prior to ceasement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early on June 27, CEO Kris Marszalek confirmed all cardholder balances were credited:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">UPDATE: all credits for European cardholders have been processed successfully.<\/p>\n<p>We will now focus on the process of switching of the card program to our new vendor. Investigations in April <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/049d7f17-a99c-465d-8062-5e07fd9315b1\">revealed<\/a> company accounts did not match with reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June, Wirecard said over $2 billion were \u201cmissing,\u201d sparking swift inquiry and police action into the matter. Investigations led by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in April 2015 revealed the flawed business model and questionable transactions pertaining to the firm\u2019s expansion plans in Southeast Asia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independent audits held by accounting firm KPMG in 2019 concluded there was no \u201cdiscrepancy\u201d in company accounts.
