{"id":137467,"date":"2020-06-25T02:37:42","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T01:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=137467"},"modified":"2020-06-25T02:37:42","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T01:37:42","slug":"ethereum-developer-reveals-public-multi-client-testnet-for-eth-2-0-is-a-week-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereum-developer-reveals-public-multi-client-testnet-for-eth-2-0-is-a-week-away\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethereum developer reveals public, multi-client testnet for ETH 2.0 is a &#8220;week away&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ETH 2.0, the long-awaited update for Ethereum to shift from a Proof-of-Work consensus protocol to a Proof-of-Stake system, is cobbling along for a release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rumored to go live in July and then confirmed by co-founder Vitalik Buterin to be a baseless theory, ETH 2.0 remains one of the most sought-after developments in the cryptocurrency industry, with both technologists and investors <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/analyst-ethereum-2-0-will-be-a-bigger-market-catalyst-than-the-bitcoin-halving\/\">having their reasons<\/a> for the protocol\u2019s swift launch.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Altona coming next week<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday, Ethereum developer Danny Ryan <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ethereum.org\/2020\/06\/23\/eth2-quick-update-no-12\/\">posted a blog<\/a> on the Ethereum Foundation\u2019s website, giving a few insights on current developments and what to look forward to in the next few weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">eth2 quick update #12<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/39UIuLIpA2\">https:\/\/t.co\/39UIuLIpA2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>tl;dr below<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; dannyryan (@dannyryan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dannyryan\/status\/1275490048784261120?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 23, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan wrote that ETH 2.0\u2019s first public, multi-client testnet is expected to launch within the \u201cnext seven days.\u201d He started off saying the update in specifications were not demanding, but the team\u2019s focus on security, optimization, and to \u201cgenerally harden the clients\u201d took a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Called Altona, the testnet will initially be rolled out to client teams \u2014 Prysm, Lighthouse, Nimbus, and Teku \u2014 testing nodes on the network. Other client teams, including developer Afri Schoeden and unnamed Ethereum Foundation members, will also feature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deposit contract addresses, after the initial launch, will be released to allow for open, public participation, noted Ryan. He added Altona is more of a developer-focused testnet than an end-user one, explaining:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>\u201cThat is, [allows] client teams to sanity check v0.12 software in a production setting and for eth2 engineers as a whole to work through any bugs that might only arise in a multi-client setting.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the above is done, a \u201clarger, community focused testnet\u201d featuring the of 16,384 validators will be open.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Solidity deposit contracts<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the updates, Ryan said a newer deposit contract will be rolled out, one written in the Solidity language instead of Vyper as previously. The change is \u201centirely transparent\u201d for all existing client and dev tooling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reasons for the shift included Vyper throwing up latency issues in security audits and developer tests, with one <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/consensys\/\">ConsenSys<\/a> engineer, Suhabe Bugrara, not recommending the \u201cbytecode as secure as long as it used the Vyper compiler.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the Solidity contract and the launch of Altona, Ryan added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to announce a continuation grant for Sigma Prime\u2019s multi-client differential fuzzing effort \u2013 beacon-fuzz. To date, this project has already been a huge success, finding bugs in all of the clients onboarded into the system.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ETH 2.0 is a piece of art.
