Data suggests that large buyers \u2013 sometimes referred to as \u201csmart money\u201d \u2013 have been in full Bitcoin accumulation mode over the past couple of months, with the number of proverbial \u201cwhales\u201d hitting multi-year highs just in the past week.<\/p>\n

From a macro perspective, this data metric is offering significant hope to investors, as it signals that one of the benchmark cryptocurrency\u2019s most important investor groups<\/a> is optimistic that the crypto will eventually see an upside.<\/p>\n

However bullish this may be in the long run, it still doesn\u2019t negate the fact that the crypto has shown signs of technical weakness throughout the past couple of months.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin whale count rockets to multi-year highs amidst market-wide recovery<\/h2>\n

The decline was seen on March 12th \u2013 a day now referred to by investors as \u201cBlack Thursday\u201d \u2013 rocked the crypto markets, leading to widespread capitulation amongst retail investors while also flushing out the vast majority of the crypto\u2019s margin traders.<\/p>\n

This decline was not enough to rock the core of the cryptocurrency\u2019s investor composition, as so-called \u201cwhales\u201d began accumulating Bitcoin<\/a> at a rapid rate in the time immediately following this event.<\/p>\n

This occurrence is clearly illustrated by data offered earlier this month<\/a> from blockchain analysis platform Glassnode<\/a>, showing that the number of Bitcoin whales hit 2-year highs just over a week ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe number of BTC whales continues to grow, hitting 2-year highs – the last time we saw this many during an accumulation phase was in 2016. This becomes interesting when we compare it with the last Bitcoin halving.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Will this be enough to give Bitcoin a much-needed near-term boost?<\/h2>\n

Despite there being a historical correlation between whales accumulating and Bitcoin seeing notable price rallies, it is still a strong possibility that BTC sees further downside in the weeks and months ahead before starting a sustainable upwards movement.<\/p>\n

In reference to the aforementioned data, crypto analyst Cole Garner<\/a> told his 15k followers that a climbing whale count is bullish in the \u201cbig picture\u201d but will not be enough to stop BTC from sweeping its lows between $4,800 and $5,600.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s bullish *big picture* \u2014 but a sweep of the lows could come first. If we leg down, I\u2019m a buyer from $5600 on down to $4800.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
