Crypto exec tells all"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the strong downturn seen in the crypto markets, epitomized by Bitcoin's 50 percent decline that transpired on Mar. 12, the amount of Tether's USDT stablecoin in existence has exploded.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, according to industry news aggregator Unfolded, the market capitalization of the asset recently surpassed $6 billion, with $1 billion added to this metric in the past two weeks alone. In an industry valued at under $200 billion, such inflows are clearly dramatic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129477 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cryptounfolded_tweet_1243449620321177600-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"tether\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cryptounfolded_tweet_1243449620321177600-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cryptounfolded_tweet_1243449620321177600-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cryptounfolded_tweet_1243449620321177600-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cryptounfolded_tweet_1243449620321177600-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/cryptounfolded_tweet_1243449620321177600.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, alternative stablecoin solutions \u2014 Paxos Dollar, USD Coin, Binance USD, etc. \u2014 have been printing dozens of millions of coins, too.<\/p>\n<p>This begs two questions: 1) what is driving this demand for stablecoins? 2) How will the increase in stablecoin supply affect Bitcoin moving forward?<\/p>\n<h2>Why has Tether's market cap gone vertical?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/sam-bankman-fried\/\">Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a>, a former institutional investor turned CEO of both derivative exchange <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ftx\">FTX<\/a> and Bitcoin quant fund Alameda, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SBF_Alameda\/status\/1244782130619486209\">chalked<\/a> up the phenomenon of the rapidly-increasing stock of USDT to three factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over-the-counter traders, &#8220;primarily from Asia,&#8221; are looking to acquire USDT. Although Bankman-Fried did not elaborate on this assertion, it is a known fact that Chinese traders use Tether's solutions because they can't access the crypto markets in any other way. Some have also suggested that USDT is a good way to move money around the world, even if one doesn't want to interact with Bitcoin.<\/li>\n<li>People are selling Bitcoin for USDT to &#8220;hedge positions.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>People are selling Bitcoin for USDT to &#8220;reduce risk.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1) Alright, time for some answers!<\/p>\n<p>My brief explanation is roughly:<\/p>\n<p>There&#39;s huge buy-side demand for USDT.  It&#39;s coming from:<\/p>\n<p>a) OTC flow, primarily from Asia<br \/>b) People selling BTC &#8211;&gt; USDT to hedge positions<br \/>c) People selling BTC &#8211;&gt; USDT to reduce risk <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cFWSQhhAVl\">https:\/\/t.co\/cFWSQhhAVl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; SBF (@SBF_Alameda) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SBF_Alameda\/status\/1244782130619486209?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 31, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>All this, he wrote, is &#8220;drives up [the price of USDT] and in turn supply, so people create.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Bullish for Bitcoin<\/h2>\n<p>Although a majority of the USDT demands being sparked by sell-side demand rather than investors looking to buy BTC with the stablecoin, the strong increase in blockchain dollars could be a boost to the crypto market in the future.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/a-factor-that-predicted-the-bitcoin-crash-in-2018-suggests-bullish-action-is-ahead\/\">reported by CryptoSlate previously<\/a>, Charles Edwards, a digital asset manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/caprioleio\/status\/1216765776515956737\">remarked in January<\/a> that \u201cmajor changes in Tether\u2019s <span class=\"glossaryTerm\" data-title=\"Market Capitalization\" data-content=\"A measurement of the market valuation for outstanding tokens. Calculated by taking the price of a single token and multiplying it by the amount of tokens not outstanding.\" data-url=\"\/glossary\/market-capitalization\">market capitalization<\/span>\u00a0have led Bitcoin\u2019s price over the last 1.5 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was seemingly proven true when BTC rallied as high as $10,500 by mid-February, following the pseudo-indicator he spotted just a month prior to that.<\/p>\n<p>Also,\u00a0prior to the nearly 50 percent crash in November 2018 that saw BTC plunge from $6,000 to $3,150, the amount of USDT circulating fell by hundreds of millions; also, prior to the majority of 2019\u2019s 330 percent rally was the printing of hundreds of millions worth of the coins.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Major changes in Tether&#39;s Market Cap have led Bitcoin&#39;s price over the last 1.5 years.<\/p>\n<p>5 January 2020 was no different.  <\/p>\n<p>A healthy signal. <\/p>\n<p>Keep it printing ?\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dfe0dBJzwh\">pic.twitter.com\/dfe0dBJzwh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Charles Edwards (@caprioleio) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/caprioleio\/status\/1216765776515956737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 13, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The record-level USDT printing we're seeing would suggest that Bitcoin is soon going to see a record rally.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamentally, this makes sense; although there are few details as to how one can deposit U.S. dollars and receive USDT in return, the introduction of\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryTerm\" data-title=\"Fiat\" data-content=\"Currency that has no direct material backing, usually in reference to debt based markets such as USD.\" data-url=\"\/glossary\/fiat\">fiat<\/span> into this industry through stablecoins should eventually act as a catalyst for Bitcoin\u2019s growth when USDT holders sell their coins for BTC or other digital assets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the strong downturn seen in the crypto markets, epitomized by Bitcoin&#8217;s 50 percent decline that transpired on Mar. 12, the amount of Tether&#8217;s USDT stablecoin in existence has exploded.
