Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, is currently polling at third<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0place in the Democratic primary nomination and, earlier today, he announced his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mikebloomberg.com\/policies\/financial-reform?gclid=Cj0KCQiAs67yBRC7ARIsAF49CdUaQgUoq4_RgENPY5LdPF4C2httd0z6DvVCMz1WyGvBgXTQJAQ5py0aAquzEALw_wcB\"><span class=\"s3\">plan<\/span><\/a> for \u201cFinancial Reform\u201d which included plans for cryptocurrency regulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Prior to running for President, in an interview on his Bloomberg channel alongside former Goldman Sachs chief Lloyd Blankfein in 2017, Bloomberg answered \u201cnot in our lifetime\u201d when asked about when businesses would need to have a \u201cBitcoin strategy\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He furthered his point arguing that \u201cwhether you think [Bitcoin is] a fraud or you think it\u2019s a game and tulip bulbs\u201d, a reference to the tulip mania of the Dutch Golden Age, small business wouldn\u2019t need to focus on Bitcoin because it doesn\u2019t have to do with \u201ctrying to create products people want to buy\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, in his newly released financial plan, Bloomberg has a more optimistic view of Bitcoin and crypto, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCryptocurrencies have become an asset class worth hundreds of billions of dollars\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Cryptocurrency regulation<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Along with the optimistic view of crypto, Bloomberg\u2019s plan recognizes that \u201cregulatory <\/span><span class=\"s1\">oversight remains fragmented and undeveloped\u201d and that the crypto community still has \u201cplenty of hype, fraud and criminal activity\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Among the regulatory changes, he would like to make as President, the plan outlines clarifying who is in charge of the cryptocurrency regulation, creating clear guidelines for investments and ICOs, and putting the protection of consumers at the forefront of this push for innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This is music to the ears of many in the blockchain community as clarified regulatory guidelines would make it easier to make sure crypto projects are abiding by the law while others worry that such plans will lead to overregulation and as a result, will stifle innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Democratic candidates have already shared a variety of views on Bitcoin and crypto. <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/andrew-yang\/\">Andrew Yang<\/a>, a former entrepreneur that recently dropped out of the race, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewYang\/status\/1021794073835855873\"><span class=\"s3\">had gone as far as<\/span><\/a> to accept cryptocurrencies as campaign donations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On the other hand, Elizabeth Warren, a Senator from Massachusetts, has said that crypto is easy to steal and can used for scams during a Senate Banking Committee hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As the 2020 election campaign continues, it will be deeply interesting to see how Michael Bloomberg\u2019s plan for regulating cryptocurrencies is developed and whether other Democratic candidates will support similar initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidates participated in the last debate before the Nevada caucuses on Saturday.
