{"id":125326,"date":"2020-02-12T11:30:32","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T11:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=125326"},"modified":"2020-02-12T09:37:09","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T09:37:09","slug":"crypto-just-lost-pro-bitcoin-andrew-yang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-just-lost-pro-bitcoin-andrew-yang\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto just lost its pro-Bitcoin candidate as Andrew Yang drops out of the U.S. presidential race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, Feb. 11, pro-crypto presidential candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/andrew-yang\/\">Andrew Yang<\/a> has dropped out of the 2020 race after a \u201cbitterly disappointing\u201d outcome in the New Hampshire primary where he trailed in a dismal eighth place.<\/p>\n<p>Yang\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/meet-andrew-yang-the-pro-bitcoin-presidential-candidate\/\">campaign drew a lot of attention<\/a> inside and out of the cryptocurrency space based on his pledge of a universal base income giving all Americans $1,000 a month to counter the effects of job redundancy through increasing automation.<\/p>\n<p>Highly tech-savvy and self-proclaimed as \u201ca numbers guy,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H6cJzBrH_4I\">announced his withdrawal<\/a> from the campaign telling the crowds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I am the math guy and it is clear from these numbers that we are not going to win the race.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Andrew Yang wanted to provide legal clarity around cryptocurrencies<\/h2>\n<p>Yang caused quite a stir among the cryptocurrency community for his pro-bitcoin stance. In fact, he even campaign accepted donations in BTC and made cryptocurrency a key part of his agenda.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New Policy #22 &#8211; Digital Asset\/Cryptocurrency Regulation.  Investment in cryptocurrencies and digital assets has far outpaced our regulatory frameworks. (@AndrewYang) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewYang\/status\/1118951469091368960?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 18, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>On his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yang2020.com\/policies\/digital-asset-regulation\/\">campaign page<\/a>, he recognized that \u201cblockchain has vast potential.\u201d He also stated that cryptocurrencies and digital assets had grown quickly and \u201crepresent a large amount of value and economic activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he said that this quick growth has \u201chas outstripped the government\u2019s response.\u201d If elected, Yang proposed to establish a proper national framework for cryptocurrencies that would allow the U.S. to compete with other jurisdictions such as China and Europe. He stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u2019s time for the federal government to create clear guidelines as to how cryptocurrencies\/digital asset markets will be treated and regulated so that investment can proceed with all relevant information.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, Yang was the only presidential candidate to thrust cryptocurrency front and center in his campaign and propose legal <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/andrew-yang-technology-of-cryptocurrency-is-powerful-optimistic-in-long-term\/\">clarity on the situation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Yang may be out but he\u2019s not down<\/h2>\n<p>Alas, it was not to be. The presidential candidate of East Asian descent dropped out of the race yesterday after garnering just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/election-results\/2020-live-results-new-hampshire-democratic-primary\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_1\">2.8 percent<\/a> of the votes in the New Hampshire primary.<\/p>\n<p>In an emotional speech to supporters, Yang reminded the crowds that he was \u201ca numbers guy\u201d and could not win the race based on this performance.<\/p>\n<p>He also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/andrew-yang-drops-out-of-presidential-race\/2020\/02\/11\/4fe2c97c-4c2c-11ea-9b5c-eac5b16dafaa_story.html?utm_source=reddit.com\">said in an interview<\/a> before addressing them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In most of these [upcoming] states, I\u2019m not going to be at a threshold where I get delegates, which makes sticking around not necessarily helpful or productive in terms of furthering the goals of this campaign.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Clearly, this was not the result that he or his supporters wanted. However, he assured them that their time had not been wasted.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/i9lujErI4i\">pic.twitter.com\/i9lujErI4i<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Andrew Yang? (@AndrewYang) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewYang\/status\/1227416026968621056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Yang may be out, but he\u2019s not down. He thanked and acknowledged his supporters for their \u201chundreds of thousands of hours\u201d of work and said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We\u2019ve accomplished so much together\u2026 We highlighted the problems in our communities as our economy is being transformed before our eyes by technology and automation.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Frequently mocking himself as a \u201cmath guy\u201d and a \u201cnerd,\u201d and being young, immigrant and tech-savvy, his natural charisma appealed to many who called themselves the \u2018Yang Gang\u2019 and often attended rallies in his trademark \u201cmath\u201d hats.<\/p>\n<p>In his closing speech, he reminded supporters of how far they had come and said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This is just the starting line, this campaign has awoken something fundamental in this country and ourselves.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One emotional supporter cried out, \u201cWe love you Andrew!\u201d which kickstarted the crowd into chanting his name &#8220;Andrew Yang&#8221;, &#8220;Andrew Yang&#8221;, over and over.<\/p>\n<h2>Appreciative response on social media<\/h2>\n<p>Acknowledging his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/YangForPresidentHQ\/comments\/f2im9v\/andrew_yang_drops_out_of_presidential_race\/\">following on Reddit<\/a>, one of Yang\u2019s campaigners posted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Dearest Yang Gang: There is a bright future for us, we're not giving up our ground. I'm here to keep fighting, I hope you'll keep it up too. There's plenty of work left to be done. Good game everyone &#8211; Love you all.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The responses were overwhelmingly supportive, including comments like:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Our guy did something AMAZING. Seriously.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;He brought universal basic income into the mainstream, much the same way Bernie did the $15 min. wage in 2016.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Wow. Wow. Wow. It's been the honor of a lifetime to fight for this campaign.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even those who didn\u2019t support Yang respected him for the hard work and passion he injected into his campaign. One Redditor commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I'm a Sanders supporter, but I liked Yang a lot, especially since he made the idea of a UBI mainstream. The fact is that UBI is an inevitability, and I'm happy Yang was forward thinking.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At this point in time, Yang has not come out in support of any of the other candidates.
