Not only is Quorum built on the Ethereum blockchain but JPMorgan's <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/largest-bank-in-the-us-jp-morgan-chase-unveils-cryptocurrency-jpm-coin\/\">JPM Coin<\/a> runs on top of Quorum as a stablecoin facilitating instant payments between institutional accounts.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, it\u2019s still unclear whether the Quorum team will join <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/consensys\/\">ConsenSys<\/a> after the merger. Moreover, it\u2019s unlikely that a formal deal will be announced any time soon as talks remain ongoing. The financial details are also yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n<h2>A trend of traditional finance merging with fintech startups<\/h2>\n<p>The move would mark another seachange in a steadily shifting horizon in which more incumbent financial institutions are scooping up or merging with agile fintech startups.<\/p>\n<p>Just last month we saw Visa agreeing to buy Plaid, a company that enables apps like Venmo and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/square-cash-app-bitcoin-profits-doubled-in-q2-2018\/\">Square Cash<\/a> access to financial accounts.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: Visa just announced they are buying fintech Plaid for $5.3 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Incumbent financial services companies are going to spend the next 3-5 years buying up various fintech startups.<\/p>\n<p>If they don\u2019t, the startups will put them out of business.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Pomp ? In fact, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon was <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/third-stage-grief-jamie-dimon-regrets-calling-bitcoin-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">among its staunchest critics<\/a> repeatedly calling Bitcoin \u201ca fraud\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, as the blockchain that powers bitcoin transactions began to demonstrate its advantageous qualities, banks began to scramble to get on board the blockchain train.<\/p>\n<p>They became involved in a sort of patent race with <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/06\/20\/bank-of-america-blockchain-patent-why\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bank of America<\/a> leading the charge filing some 50 blockchain patents in 2018 alone.<\/p>\n<p>Results have so far been mixed, although there does seem to be a marked preference for Ethereum. Both JPMorgan and Spanish banking giant Santander have opted for this blockchain over Bitcoin. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/santander-issues-20-million-bond-on-ethereum-blockchain\/\">Santander recently issued a $20 million bond<\/a> on the Ethereum blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>The JPMorgan Quorum blockchain unit is also currently running the Interbank Information Network, a payments network involving over 300 global banks.\u00a0 As the largest bank in the U.S. by assets, JPMorgan merging its blockchain unit with the Ethereum co-founder Lubin\u2019s blockchain startup is massive.<\/p>\n<h2>ConsenSys recently announced a downsizing<\/h2>\n<p>Talks of the merger come at a time when the New York-based ConsenSys recently announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/consensys.net\/blog\/press-release\/consensys-outlines-strategic-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">major restructuring<\/a>. The move will cut as much as 14 percent of its workforce and is intended to separate its software development business from its venture activities. This will align its interests in merging with Quorum to grow this division.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Reuters report, JPMorgan has been considering either \u201cspinning off\u201d Quorum or merging it for at least two years now.
