According to research from Messari, the gap between the volume of ether and the volume of stablecoins has significantly widened after <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\">Tether<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\">USDT<\/a>) migrated to Ethereum in Q2 2019.<\/p>\n<h2>Move over ether, stablecoins now run the Ethereum show<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ether<\/a> (ETH) is the world's second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, but it's not the most popular cryptocurrency on its own network. Once the dominant force on the Ethereum blockchain, ETH is slowly, but surely, being replaced by less volatile and more efficient assets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/messari.io\/article\/the-flippening-of-eth-the-rise-of-stablecoins-on-ethereum\">According to<\/a> the latest research from Messari Crypto, Ethereum's economy is now absolutely dominated by stablecoins. Ryan Watkins, a research analyst at Messari, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RyanWatkins_\/status\/1222533137110130689\">said<\/a> that the gap between ETH transfer value and stablecoin transfer value began widening mid-2019. (<i>Source<\/i>: <a href=\"https:\/\/messari.io\/article\/the-flippening-of-eth-the-rise-of-stablecoins-on-ethereum\">Messari<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Several factors could explain why stablecoins dominate the Ethereum network<\/h2>\n<p>While ERC20 stablecoins have seen their popularity increase in the past two years, it wasn't until Tether (USDT) began migrating its coins to the Ethereum blockchain that their transfer volume began to soar.<\/p>\n<p>By far the most popular stablecoin in the crypto market, USDT is a perfect answer to the volatility of the market for institutional investors looking for an easy crypto onramp. This is one of the factors that contribute to its almost unbelievable daily volume. It's $4.2 billion market cap pales in comparison to its 24-hour trading volume, which most crypto trackers estimate to be anywhere between <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/currencies\/tether\/\">$40 billion<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/en\/coins\/tether\">$64 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing that could have had a significant impact on the stablecoin dominance of the Ethereum network is the rise of DeFi. With Ethereum being one of the most popular platforms to build dApps on, it's only natural that most of them dealing in finance will find their home on the blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>Data from DeFi Pulse showed that the total USD value locked in DeFi has risen from $274 million to almost $900 million since Jan. 1, 2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/maker\/\">Maker<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/makerdao\/\">DAO<\/a> and its ERC20 stablecoin <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/dai\/\">Dai<\/a> are responsible for almost 60 percent of that.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 708px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/rlEF4f4IEf_nzgtzEy3Splhx2tUEd3ohgvU_9OwiuOUMJBiXuajIvLtk2mP1XBTFmcPQsZiRJaipDOJ8oyiPCb3c1Ttubr477Sww2OODxa7ICKPx2NzP-2oVYOqYhm_3KBbEedKT\" alt=\"Graph showing the total USD value locked in DeFi dApps\" width=\"708\" height=\"423\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graph showing the total USD value locked in DeFi dApps.
