It was created by <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/lightning-labs\/\">Lightning Labs<\/a>, a San Francisco-based company building the next generation of decentralized financial infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The idea behind it was to increase the transaction throughput of BTC\u2019s blockchain network. This open-source protocol enables instant payments at exceptionally low fees with millions to billions of transactions per second, and cross-chain atomic swaps.<\/p>\n<p>BitMEX Research, a subsidiary of the crypto-derivatives trading platform <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/bitmex\/\">BitMEX<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bitmex.com\/lightning-network-part-6-over-60000-non-cooperative-channel-closures\/\">published<\/a> its sixth report on the Bitcoin\u2019s Lightning Network. The research team focused on blockchain data regarding non-cooperative channel closures. Based on this dataset, it was determined that LN usage is \u201chigher than expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe volume of transactions here [in non-cooperative channe] is quite large and may indicate more experimentation with lightning than many expected. The data also indicates non-cooperative closures are more of a common closure type than people think.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to BitMEX Research, a non-cooperative channel closure occurs when the output of a given transaction is redeemed during the sweeping of funds after the channel is closed. To date, there have been nearly 60,000 channel closure transactions spending a total of 1,074 Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1319px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/EOJH7hdWkAA5uFy?format=png&name=large\" alt=\"Non-Cooperative Channel Closure data by BitMEX\" width=\"1319\" height=\"622\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Non-cooperative channel closure data by <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bitmex.com\/lightning-network-part-6-over-60000-non-cooperative-channel-closures\/\">BitMEX Research<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Scalability and security flaws<\/h2>\n<p>The researchers at BitMEX expected the number of non-cooperative channel closure to be around 30,000. This is half of what the actual number is. The massive amount of channel closures raises concerns about the stability of the LN.<\/p>\n<p>BitMEX Research said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe fact that non-cooperative closures are more common than many thought, means the privacy and scalability benefits of lightning are lower than many expected too.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite the scalability and security flaws on the LN, BitMEX Research affirmed that non-cooperative closure volumes dropped significantly since March 2019. The steep decline may be indicative of \u201cimproved user behavior and wallets\u201d. According to the researchers, as users become familiar with the proper use of the LN and lightning wallets, \u201cthe prevalence of non-cooperative closures could fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Lightning Network is still an experimental project. Although different crypto exchanges, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/bitfinex\/\">Bitfinex<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitfinex-becomes-the-first-crypto-exchange-to-add-support-for-the-lightning-network\/\">added<\/a> support for LN deposits and withdrawals for faster and cheaper transactions, many argue that it is not ready for production. Redditor ZipoTm \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/dlvokv\/how_i_lost_4_btc_on_lightning_network\/\">lost<\/a>\u201d four Bitcoins on the LN hinting that it is not easy to use.
