{"id":120706,"date":"2019-12-10T23:50:16","date_gmt":"2019-12-10T23:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=120706"},"modified":"2022-02-20T14:37:24","modified_gmt":"2022-02-20T14:37:24","slug":"340m-of-collateral-in-makerdao-could-have-been-easily-wiped-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/340m-of-collateral-in-makerdao-could-have-been-easily-wiped-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Developer says $340M of collateral in MakerDAO could have been easily wiped out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Maker Foundation is introducing a new security proposal after a well-known software engineer revealed that a malicious actor with enough <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/maker\/\">Maker<\/a> (MKR) could steal all of the collateral in MakerDAO, taking with him over $340 million.<\/p>\n<h2>The art of the heist<\/h2>\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/coinmonks\/how-to-turn-20m-into-340m-in-15-seconds-48d161a42311\">Medium post<\/a>, freelance developer Micah Zoltu revealed that anyone with approximately 80,000 MKR could wipe out all of the collateral in MakerDAO. This includes <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/multi-collateral-dai\/\">DAI<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/dai\/\">SAI<\/a>, as well as all the assets in other integrated systems, such as Compound and Uniswap. The hacker could potentially walk out with over $340 million.<\/p>\n<p>Zoltu disclosed that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/makerdao-launches-multi-collateral-dai-as-mkr-holds-steady\/\">Multi-Collateral Dai (MCD)<\/a> was supposed to launch with security features to prevent bad actors from disrupting the system. However, the Maker Foundation failed to implement more stringent safeguards.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of protocols regarding emergency shutdowns and governance delays allows malicious actors to steal all of the collateral in MarkerDao. And, defenders would have 0 seconds to defend the system against the attack.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAn attacker could do the following: acquire 80,000 MKR through whatever means possible. Create an executive contract that is programmed to transfer all collateral from Maker to you. Immediately (in the same transaction) vote on the contract. Immediately (in the same transaction) activate the contract. [And,] ride off into the sunset with 340M USD worth of ETH,\u201d explained Zoltu.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>MakerDAO takes immediate actions<\/h2>\n<p>A few hours after Zoltu published the infamous article, MakerDAO released an official <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.makerdao.com\/governance-security-module-gsm\/\">statement<\/a> claiming that measures would be taken to fix this loophole.<\/p>\n<p>The firm introduced the Governance Security Module (GSM) into the core protocol. GSM increases the governance delays from 0 to 24 hours. This allows MKR holders to have enough time to review executive contracts before they are deployed.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe GSM is designed to give the MKR token holders a chance to review any changes that will go into the system and act accordingly if those changes are deemed to be malicious,\u201d reads the announcement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the flaw that Zoltu found in MakerDAO\u2019s protocol, it seems like the team acted quickly.
