The project, which is essentially a Google Sheets sidechain, secures the transactions with OAuth.<\/p>\n<h2>Google Sheets Ethereum wallet wins this year's hackathon<\/h2>\n<p>Despite recent controversy over its lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/community-still-believes-in-ethereum-2-0-despite-scaling-challenges\/\">scalability<\/a> and a struggling price, Ethereum is still one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereum-developer-activity-is-seeing-parabolic-growth-says-analyst-will-price-follow\/\">popular<\/a> blockchain projects in the world. That is why Ethereum hackathons attract thousands of developers each year, all of them competing to launch the most innovative project on the network.<\/p>\n<p>This year's ETHWaterloo, an Ethereum hackathon took place last week and saw 65 different projects submitted. According to the organizers of the Toronto-based event, this brings the number of Ethereum hackathon projects to over 1,000.<\/p>\n<p>The most famous project that has come out of an Ethereum hackathon is <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/cryptokitties\/\">CryptoKitties<\/a>, an Ethereum collectibles game that notoriously jammed the network due to incredibly high traffic. This year, however, the winner of the hackathon was a much more ambitious project that has the potential to bring the network closer to mainstream adoption.<\/p>\n<p>Humorously called <a href=\"https:\/\/devpost.com\/software\/sheetcoin\">Sheetcoin<\/a>, the hackathon winner is based on an ambitious idea\u2014turning Google Sheets into an Ethereum wallet. Developers behind Sheetcoin built a Google Sheets sidechain on Ethereum, enabling users to send ERC20 tokens to any Gmail address.<\/p>\n<p>What makes this project special is the fact that the recipient of the tokens doesn't need to have a crypto wallet. Instead, all recipients need is a Google account. Received tokens can then be withdrawn to any cryptocurrency wallets, Sheetcoin is &#8220;fully connected&#8221; to Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.substack.com\/p\/ethereum-hackers-built-key-infrastructure\">According to<\/a> <i>The Defiant<\/i>, the transactions through Sheetcoin use OAuth, a security standard used to grant access to information without revealing private data such as passwords.<\/p>\n<h2>Security and privacy dominate hackathon projects<\/h2>\n<p>Sheetcoin wasn't the only project that had a strong focus on security. While most hackathon entries were developing DeFi projects, several finalists were building security and privacy-focused applications.<\/p>\n<p>One of the top five projects on the hackathon, <a href=\"https:\/\/devpost.com\/software\/eth-p2p-voip-e-th-phonehome\">Eth P2P VOIP<\/a>, used the Ethereum network to increase phone call security. The project prevents spam calls, SIM swapping, and data gathering by allowing users to call an Ethereum address.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devpost.com\/software\/dc-wallet\">DeFi Custody Wallet<\/a>, another highly rated hackathon entry, is a smart contract that introduced a &#8220;dead man switch.&#8221; The mechanism sends all of the funds in a wallet to a predetermined address if the wallet isn't used for a predetermined amount of time.<\/p>\n<p>While none of these projects introduced an idea that has never been heard before, all of them offered practical solutions to some of the most persistent problems the crypto industry faces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The winner of this year&#8217;s Ethereum hackathon, Sheetcoin, is a bold project that turned Google Sheets into an Ethereum wallet, enabling users to send ERC20 tokens to any Gmail address directly from their browser.
