{"id":117145,"date":"2019-10-31T09:19:59","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T09:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=117145"},"modified":"2019-11-25T04:25:25","modified_gmt":"2019-11-25T04:25:25","slug":"3iq-expects-to-launch-bitcoin-etf-this-quarter-after-favorable-ruling-from-canadas-top-securities-regulator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/3iq-expects-to-launch-bitcoin-etf-this-quarter-after-favorable-ruling-from-canadas-top-securities-regulator\/","title":{"rendered":"3iQ expects to launch Bitcoin ETF this quarter after &#8220;favorable&#8221; ruling from Canada&#8217;s top securities regulator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) has ruled to allow crypto fund manager 3iQ to issue a prospectus for its prospective exchange-traded Bitcoin fund, signaling that Canada\u2019s top securities regulator may be about to approve the launch of the nation\u2019s first Bitcoin ETF.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto-based 3iQ said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/3iq.ca\/3iq-corp\/3iq-bitcoin-fund-receives-favourable-ruling-from-osc-panel\/\">press release<\/a> Wednesday that its planned closed-end BTC fund, \u201cThe Bitcoin Fund,\u201d had moved on to the final stage of judgment with the OSC and that it expected it would receive clearance to launch on a major Canadian stock exchange as early as this quarter.<\/p>\n<p>3iQ painted the ruling as a conclusion to three years of work with the OSC\u2019s Investment Funds and Structured Products division, convincing the regulator that the fund will be able to resolve \u201cpricing, custody, audit, and public interest issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Beating the U.S. to the punch on the coveted ETF<\/h2>\n<p>The news will come to many as a watershed moment in Bitcoin\u2019s history after years upon years of failed efforts to launch a BTC ETF in the United States. Traditionally, the expectation has been that a Bitcoin ETF could inject tens, if not <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/ironwood-rg\/how-etfs-can-bring-bitcoin-over-35k-aacc58477b7e\">hundreds of billions of dollars<\/a> into Bitcoin\u2019s market capitalization by seeing the original cryptocurrency incorporated into mainstream financial products like retirement accounts and mutual funds (alone a multi-trillion-dollar market).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113282\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113282\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/another-day-another-etf-denial-sec-rejects-7-bitcoin-etf-proposals\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-113282\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bitcoin-banks-social-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"Another Day, Another ETF Denial: SEC Rejects 9 Bitcoin ETF Proposals\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bitcoin-banks-social-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bitcoin-banks-social-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bitcoin-banks-social-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bitcoin-banks-social.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113282\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/another-day-another-etf-denial-sec-rejects-7-bitcoin-etf-proposals\/\">Another Day, Another ETF Denial: SEC Rejects 9 Bitcoin ETF Proposals<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The OSC\u2019s U.S. counterpart, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), seemed to create a tone of despair amongst Bitcoin proponents and its <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sec-commissioner-no-reason-not-to-allow-bitcoin-etf\/\">own members<\/a> over the last two years, having dismissed <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/another-day-another-etf-denial-sec-rejects-7-bitcoin-etf-proposals\/\">more than nine applications<\/a> citing concerns chiefly around custody and market surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>Incredibly, both of 3iQ\u2019s custody and surveillance providers are U.S. institutions, suggesting Canadian regulators have a softer, if not more progressive, view of how a Bitcoin fund could be operated safely in the securities market. 3iQ plans to custody the fund\u2019s BTC with <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/gemini\">Gemini<\/a> Trust Company while using VanEck for its index and market data.
