{"id":115116,"date":"2019-10-11T20:55:26","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T20:55:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=115116"},"modified":"2020-04-06T01:18:52","modified_gmt":"2020-04-06T00:18:52","slug":"ctfc-head-ethereum-commodity-anticipates-launch-eth-futures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ctfc-head-ethereum-commodity-anticipates-launch-eth-futures\/","title":{"rendered":"CTFC head: Ethereum is a commodity, anticipates launch of ETH futures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chairman of the U.S. Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CTFC) gave verbal confirmation that Ether is a commodity and that he expects an Ethereum futures contract will soon be launched in the United States, as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/cftc-says-cryptocurrency-ether-is-a-commodity-and-is-open-to-ether-derivatives-133455545.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yahoo Finance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking at Yahoo Finance\u2019s annual All Markets conference in New York, Chairman Heath Talbert emphasized that his statement reflected the views of the CTFC, the independent regulator that governs the U.S. futures and options markets, and that it was in line with the views of the CTFC\u2019s counterpart, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), who in June 2018 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-market-bounces-back-sec-declares-bitcoin-and-ethereum-are-not-securities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">declared Bitcoin and Ether as having non-security status<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The long road to ETH futures<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talbert\u2019s statement seems to come as the CTFC\u2019s ultimate judgement. In May, a senior official <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereum-futures-soon-approved-eth-surges\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the regulator was feeling \u201ccomfortable\u201d with the notion of an Ethereum futures contract trading on U.S. markets but failed to give an official ruling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum proponents have traditionally anticipated that a regulated futures offering would legitimize Ether as an asset and inject additional institutional capital. Such a scenario would be similar to how<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CME\u2019s BTC contract <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cme-bitcoin-futures-volume-130-ytd\/\">evidently increased<\/a> trading demand for Bitcoin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since its launch in December 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the world\u2019s first regulated ETH futures contract, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/first-regulated-ethereum-futures-launched-in-uk-how-will-futures-contracts-impact-eth-price\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched in May 2018 by London-based Crypto Facilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (now owned by U.S. crypto exchange Kraken), has had little traction with institutional and retail investors, averaging less than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cryptofacilities.com\/trading\/dashboard?symbol=FI_ETHUSD_191025\">$1 million<\/a> volume a day this month.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the blessing of the CTFC, however, U.S. institutions have now been given regulatory clarity over Ether's legal status, and one of the United States' many heavyweight commodities houses may be drawn into offering a cash-settled futures contract for Ethereum\u2014a development that would inevitably push the cryptocurrency further toward market maturity.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The chairman of the U.S. Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CTFC) gave verbal confirmation that Ether is a commodity and that he expects an Ethereum futures contract will soon be launched in the United States, as reported by Yahoo Finance.
