The drop follows a breakout of a month of consolidation around the $10,000 price point, beginning mid-August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has startled investors is the speed of the drop. Mirroring the expediency of Bitcoin\u2019s gravity-defying price gains, in less than 72-hours three months of gains were erased.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/ON6vnA-JB7kBXpT88u9Srl_cPHazO-W4xaIMJA2Lf4L8WUrT_952ImyaAyuWp6q1b8XQU5yEaPKL4SqWDJLzuS1TGsUaaeo06MugkZaX694xxoZkQ5CUBtORwChTfaR0au9Rd2Lq\" alt=\"Bitcoin US dollar price chart\" width=\"1252\" height=\"792\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">BTC\/USD by TradingView<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drop isn\u2019t a market anomaly, either. The movement is supported by $18.3 billion in reported trading volume from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/coinmarketcap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoinMarketCap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, up 7.6 percent. The figure follows two impressive days posting $25.0 billion and $21.7 billion in trading volume on Sept. 24 and 25, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result of the recent market movement, Bitcoin volatility spiked considerably after trending downward since late July, increasing 48 percent from 2.1 to 3.1 percentage points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1169px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/ausS1acX46Zaq42ydRdjEizX7CGO0uHrR50NzsUjRG3uqW_rUHf7mfHsaLHqjZbmDPmVWXfc2yVigvAQwYQPE9aY4z8bFCBTL9tfWOvR0girfaqIjdjzMIzdRUXFFRM5IA4ZoKTK\" alt=\"Bitcoin volatility index chart\" width=\"1169\" height=\"426\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buybitcoinworldwide.com\/volatility-index\/\">Volatility Index<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the sudden price drop, BTC dominance actually increased over a full percentage point from 67.2 to 68.3 percent. This indicates that Bitcoin isn\u2019t alone in its loss of value, with altcoins bearing even greater losses, on average.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of overall cryptocurrency market capitalization, an impressive $40 billion flowed out of the markets\u2014a 15.7 percent drop. This does not factor-in the flight of investment to stablecoins like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tether<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/usd-coin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USD Coin<\/span><\/a>.
