{"id":114463,"date":"2019-09-25T05:04:01","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T05:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=114463"},"modified":"2020-04-06T01:18:53","modified_gmt":"2020-04-06T00:18:53","slug":"did-mass-liquidations-on-bitmex-cause-bitcoins-sudden-drop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/did-mass-liquidations-on-bitmex-cause-bitcoins-sudden-drop\/","title":{"rendered":"Did mass liquidations on BitMEX cause Bitcoin&#8217;s sudden drop?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bitcoin has stabilized around the $8,600-mark hours after a ferocious sell-off led on BitMEX saw price decline more than 13 percent, liquidating more than six hundred million long contracts on the Seychelles-based exchange, according to data on <a href=\"https:\/\/datamish.com\/d\/000000004\/btcusd?refresh=20s&orgId=1\">Datamish.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The decline, Bitcoin\u2019s largest intraday plunge in months, saw the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization shed 13.5 percent in USD in under two hours starting at around 18:00 U.T.C. and ultimately seeing the coin go as low as $8,200 by 19:30.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1348px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/rGnvLugDqNBBDNyB_EYMlpYmoKe9p7hRu9_eY6lvADtdiXiOo4s06Rr3Oir2kdPUP0VL5S9_9JoOInSYF3sUtoqyLf3wLbBvRqzeAPAGfGbCFRxVVEy4bF2QWDriTqyFNhvIklsQ\" alt=\"BitMEX\" width=\"1348\" height=\"750\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">BTC price<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The sentiment seems largely unchanged after the drop, however, with the Crypto Fear & Greed Index, an aggregation of various sentiment indicators, indicating a slight move towards fear.<\/p>\n<h2>BitMEX liquidations to blame?<\/h2>\n<p>A confusion of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-drops-15-indicators-show-potential-for-decline-to-6500\/\">theories<\/a> have surfaced to explain the cause of the savage decline, yet a compelling one is that it was fuelled\u2014perhaps not started\u2014by a series of liquidations and margin calls on 100x leverage crypto derivatives giant <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/bitmex\">BitMEX<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As Bitcoin broke out of its monthslong consolidation between $9,300 and $10,950 to the downside (denoted below by red lines), the leveraged long positions would have outrun their margin and been liquidated\u2014effectively creating a waterfall of market sell orders forced by the platform, and exacerbating the decline.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1348px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/Vgv0PudTJNAlCOI824W4qbi_6LDmJNyBZyoltmoxcSdxiZOsC08My0M6-P0v7gKs66ENnEFVzGJaT0Uj2nvYsLLDaGTb1hbn2JvlVNWmXs-fgMXPOMpgKWQhHrArDlpmKomkpQ_U\" alt=\"BitMEX\" width=\"1348\" height=\"701\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: TradingView<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The data seems to indicate as much. BitMEX saw volumes worth $2.5 billion during the sell-off, ultimately making the day one of the exchange\u2019s biggest trading days in months, and seeing almost 6 percent of all long liquidations to date this year occur during the two-hour window.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns that leveraged derivatives exchanges such as BitMEX can collapse Bitcoin\u2019s price in this fashion have circulated for years and have apparently <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bakkt-confirms-launch-of-physically-settled-bitcoin-futures\/\">inspired<\/a> a number of non-leveraged initiatives, perhaps most topically <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/bakkt\/\">Bakkt\u2019s<\/a> just-launched futures product.<\/p>\n<p>As reported previously by <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bakkt-bitcoin-futures-launch-volumes-75-times-smaller-than-cmes-first-day\/\">CryptoSlate<\/a>, Monday, the first day of Bakkt\u2019s physically delivered contract, saw a fraction of the debut of its leveraged, cash-settled competitor, the CME Bitcoin futures contract.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bitcoin has stabilized around the $8,600-mark hours after a ferocious sell-off led on BitMEX saw price decline more than 13 percent, liquidating more than six hundred million long contracts on the Seychelles-based exchange, according to data on Datamish.com.
