So far, the attacker gained 30,000 EOS worth over $110,000 while\u00a0making the network &#8220;unusable.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Scale of the exploit<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clever attacker was able to use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eosauthority.com\/rex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an EOS resource exchange for RAM and CPU, to ensure that blocks were filled with their transactions to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continuously win<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the gambling dApp EOSPlay. This resulted in the EOSIO network &#8220;freezing&#8221; as thousands of EOS were fed to the attacker's wallet, as confirmed by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rektkid_\/status\/1172595110237921281?s=20\">another source<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 300 EOS, worth a little over $1,000, the attacker was able to make away with 30,000 EOS tokens, said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thejaredmoore\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jared Moore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to CryptoSlate, an active community member. A look at the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eosflare.io\/account\/mumachayinmm?fbclid=IwAR2w0IRf5AcxeFEX6dNW1nbQ3DqZulRKbMfEzdECBuUO86nHXZWyJ3rzUwg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on-chain transactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bloks.io\/transaction\/5be0f1fda45026311fb1fe18dbde9fff3d83a21bbab926d4fed54dd41d3306a9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/TU3hzYe6ojy3SDKQE5CQtvJuQ0_bjR-zV9_RpQQFmX2nTXvMVCgMbW5-Y9Q3Xbz0pNA2T6iHIoWB9ExbxjSx4dyRtduVjQATKHlbKkTH7MPO1MBlCEmRcmr59zXhg8_IZ5McOkmN\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"924\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Transactions showing consecutive wins on EOSPlay. The anonymous\u00a0security engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dexaran\/status\/1172664565559189510?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1172664565559189510&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcryptoslate.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D113640%26action%3Dedit\">supported<\/a> this theory, saying that &#8220;by congesting the network the attacker disallowed anyone to send transactions because the cost was too high for most users.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That same developer stated that his EOS only provided 0.2 percent of the network resources EOSIO would normally divvy-up to stakers, an indicator of how serious the congestion was.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">2\/ Explanation:<\/p>\n<p>Probably the RNG of attacked gambling DApps could use some transactions or data from earlier blocks as a source of entropy.<br \/>It&#39;s easier to manipulate &quot;previous blocks&quot; when the network is congested and you are the only one having resources to send transactions.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dexaran (@Dexaran) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dexaran\/status\/1172664565559189510?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 14, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>What's even more insidious: the owners of the smart contracts would have difficulty disabling their contracts due to the network congestion and lack of network resources, as described above, said the developer.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until there\u2019s a fork or a patch, the exploit can continue to be abused whenever an EOSIO user spends $1,000 or more on REX, Moore added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>EOSPlay should be avoided until the exploit is fixed.
