{"id":113415,"date":"2019-09-10T08:34:19","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T15:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=113415"},"modified":"2026-04-26T16:08:34","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T15:08:34","slug":"casperlabs-raises-14-5-million-ethereum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/casperlabs-raises-14-5-million-ethereum\/","title":{"rendered":"CasperLabs raises $14.5 million to build a better Ethereum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CasperLabs, a startup attempting to crack the blockchain scalability problem, raised $14.5 million in a series A round to build a faster, safer, and more efficient proof-of-stake blockchain\u2014a lot like <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Financing innovation<\/h2>\n<p>The round was led by Terren Fiezer\u2014a financier who has held senior senior executive positions at Goldman Sachs, First Boston, and Drexel Burnham\u2014facilitated through his Los Angeles holdings company, Acuitas Group Holdings.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019ve been following and studying the crypto and blockchain space since its earliest days, and I\u2019ve been waiting for a company that can build the strength and decentralized aspects of a public chain with the speed, security, and scalability of a next-gen platform,\u201d said Piezer. \u201cScalability of a product and company is the leading driver of value creation. Consistently, the most proficiently scalable company becomes the industry leader.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Building a better blockchain<\/h2>\n<p>The startup\u2019s eponymous initiative, Casper, is one potential solution to solving problems around proof-of-stake consensus. The \u201ccorrect-by-construction\u201d solution aims to provide faster and more efficient decentralized network consensus.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, CasperLabs intends to release the first concrete implementation of Casper as its own smart contract-enabled blockchain. This new blockchain will be decentralized, sharded, and scalable, claims CEO Medha Parlikar.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum\u2019s<\/a> Casper upgrade is still a few years out while ETH 2.0 is getting closer, but as always, still <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereum-lose-confidence-eth-scaling-issues\/\">just out of reach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If this is indeed the case, then Ethereum may have yet another indirect competitor attempting to challenge its position on technological grounds. Though, the open-source research from CasperLabs may also get incorporated into Ethereum and expedite its development.<\/p>\n<h2>Bringing on Vlad Zamfir<\/h2>\n<p>In February 2019, the startup brought on <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/vlad-zamfir\/\">Vlad Zamfir<\/a>, a researcher known for his scaling-related research for Ethereum and (the now <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/rchain-cooperative-may-need-to-liquidate-rhoc-holdings-to-remain-solvent\/\">largely defunct<\/a>) RChain. He previously worked on Casper for Ethereum as early as <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/research\/blob\/master\/papers\/CasperTFG\/CasperTFG.pdf\">December 2017<\/a>. Currently, he\u2019s an \u201cindependent researcher\u201d for the startup.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI provide support interpreting and specifying the protocol, I'm not an employee or an executive or anything like that,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VladZamfir\/status\/1171404909931106304?s=20\">clarified<\/a> in a Tweet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The $14.5 million will be used to hire 10 or so people over the next year and a half to speed up development, said Parlikar. CasperLabs comprises 28 employees, 21 of which are on the core software team as engineers, researchers, or developers.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there still isn\u2019t enough information to jump to conclusions about CasperLabs\u2019 plans for its own blockchain.
