{"id":113032,"date":"2019-09-03T23:54:33","date_gmt":"2019-09-04T06:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=113032"},"modified":"2019-11-07T06:02:41","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T06:02:41","slug":"tether-plans-to-issue-two-commodity-pegged-stablecoins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-plans-to-issue-two-commodity-pegged-stablecoins\/","title":{"rendered":"Tether plans to issue two commodity-pegged stablecoins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\">Tether Ltd.<\/a> is planning to issue two new stablecoins, one pegged to a basket of commodities and another to the Chinese renminbi, according to Zhao Dong, an over-the-counter (OTC) trader in China and a shareholder of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/bitfinex\/\">Bitfinex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>New stablecoins<\/h2>\n<p>In 2018, iFinex Inc.\u2014a privately held financial technology company based in the British Virgin Islands that operates Bitfinex and owns Tether Ltd.\u2014 handed $850 million over to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/crypto-capital\/\">Crypto Capital Corp<\/a>., a Panamanian payment processor, in order for them to handle Bitfinex customers-fiat-withdrawals requests. After the agreement was made, the funds were seized by American, Polish and Portuguese authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the risks associated with keeping large sums of money on a single entity, Tether will release a stablecoin backed by a basket of commodities such as gold, crude oil and rubber, stated Zhao Dong in an <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/tether-mulls-commodity-backed-stablecoin-to-cut-bank-risk-report\">interview<\/a> with Cointelegraph.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the firm is planning to create a stablecoin that is pegged to the Chinese renminbi. Dubbed CNHT, the new stablecoin\u2019s reserve will be held in a bank in Belgium and will be \u201claunched very soon, possibly within weeks.\u201d Dong said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCNHT will not interfere with PBOC [People\u2019s Bank of China} capital control policy because CNH is different than CNY, as it's already an offshore product. On the contrary CNHT will help China to expand the adoption of CNH for international settlements.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Tether reserves<\/h2>\n<p>Although Tether remains the leading stablecoin in the cryptocurrency industry with a market capitalization of over $4 billion, it is not one-to-one backed by U.S. dollars. <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-and-bitfinex-confirm-usdt-is-not-fully-backed-by-fiat-only-74-of-tethers-backed-with-cash\/\">According<\/a> to court documents, USDTs are only 72 percent pegged, but Zhao Dong believes otherwise. Dong said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTether is fully backed by reserves, out of 4 billion existing USDT about 3.35 billion are now in securities and 650 million are being lent to Bitfinex.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now that Bitfinex was able to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitfinex-cto-says-1-billion-fund-raise-complete-is-it-good-for-the-crypto-market\/\">raise<\/a> $1 billion in USDT through the sale of its LEO token in mid-May, the firm started paying back the loan that it got from Tether. However, Bitfinex plans to recover the funds that have been frozen at Crypto Capital Corp. before full payment is issued, according to the OTC trader.<\/p>\n<p>Dong concluded:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c[Therefore,] even if you don't calculate this 650 million as reserves the total amount backed by USD is 83.75% (3,350\/4000) and not 72 percent as fake news are reporting.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tether\u2019s intention to issue two new stablecoins comes while its parent company, iFinex Inc., remains under <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitfinex-face-new-york-attorney-general-fraud-lawsuit\/\">investigation<\/a> by the New York Attorney General (NYAG) for fraudulently covering up an $850 million loss of \u201cco-mingled client and corporate funds\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tether Ltd. is planning to issue two new stablecoins, one pegged to a basket of commodities and another to the Chinese renminbi, according to Zhao Dong, an over-the-counter (OTC) trader in China and a shareholder of Bitfinex.
