(@zhusu) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zhusu\/status\/1164348633354924032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 22, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Several exchanges including ZB, 55 Asset Network, Coinex, and BBX, are now permitting users to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coinexcom\/status\/1164125805145759744\">trade against sneakers<\/a> as an underlying derivative, taking positions on each item priced in BTC and other cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/ECfOPpNUYAAy2hA?format=jpg&name=4096x4096\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"322\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Long Yeezys, short Air Jordans<\/h2>\n<p>As opposed to an open auction-style marketplaces that facilitate the purchase of collectibles, these exchanges seem focused on creating liquid derivatives markets for traditionally illiquid items\u2014with an emphasis on speculation and not actual redemption of the physical asset.<\/p>\n<p>U.S.-based exchange 55 Asset Network, for one, offers a limited supply of \u201ccollectible-backed tokens\u201d for each product in an IEO-style scheme, or what it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.55.com\/ATOList\">describes<\/a> as an \u201cAsset Token Offering\u201d (ATO).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/ECfOPpNU8AAX7uu?format=jpg&name=large\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"363\" height=\"645\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As such, 22,000 YEEZYB tokens are backed by 10 pairs of YeezyBoost 350 V2 \u201cStatic Black\u201d shoes. Users must accumulate 2,200 tokens on the exchange and cash them in in order to redeem a pair, the exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/55support.zendesk.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360034628473-55-com-Launches-Fourth-ATO-Project-Yeezy-Boost-350-V2-Static-Black-Reflective-\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Unlocking a global market<\/h2>\n<p>While it could come off as a gimmick, such a scheme could have broader implications for cryptocurrency adoption and the \u201cdeliverable\u201d (physically-settled) derivatives markets, especially for collectibles. Such an industry could be worth billions of dollars globally as fashion, trading cards, antiques, and keepsakes are transformed using crypto.<\/p>\n<p>The limited-edition sneakers market alone is estimated to be worth $2 billion and slated to top $6 billion by 2025, with some pairs of preowned (often unworn) shoes reselling for tens of thousands of dollars, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/most-expensive-sneakers-sold-last-year-resale-2019-4\">Business Insider<\/a> reported. With crypto exchange-style accessibility and liquidity, the crypto sneakers market, like other derivatives markets, could thinkably be orders of magnitude larger in capitalization than the underlying market.<\/p>\n<p>Business seems to be booming for the handful of startups in the space attempting to make the market more liquid, like StockX, a live bid marketplace for limited-edition shoes. StockX has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/337628\">reportedly<\/a> gained <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unicorn_(finance)\">unicorn<\/a> status with sales exceeding $100 million per month.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of StockX\u2019s success since its 2015 launch, its founder, Josh Luber, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/337628\">says<\/a> \u201cthe future of the business\u201d will be in allowing users to buy and sell products without ever having to handle them.
