Any balances remaining on the platform August 26th will be automatically converted into GBP, according to user reports.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zcash?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@zcash<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ElectricCoinCo?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ElectricCoinCo<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coinbase?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@coinbase<\/a> what&#39;s going on with Zcash in the UK? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6GWS9CuIoH\">pic.twitter.com\/6GWS9CuIoH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Alex (@heskavich) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/heskavich\/status\/1159519170045841410?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 8, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>No regulatory concerns says Zcash company<\/h2>\n<p>Coming without explanation, Coinbase\u2019s sudden announcement prompted concerns on Twitter that the <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cryptos\/privacy\">privacy-centric coin<\/a>\u2014which allows users to mask their addresses at discretion\u2014was to be removed due to concerns it was non-compliant with British KYC\/AML regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Unnamed sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/british-tax-authority-seeks-customer-data-from-crypto-exchanges-in-search-of-tax-evaders\">CoinDesk<\/a> August 6th HM Revenue & Customs had delivered letters \u201cin the last week or so\u201d to Coinbase, eToro and CEX.IO, who all operate in the U.K., demanding the three firms supply customer data for tax collection purposes\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/zcash\">Zcash<\/a> community appear to be connecting the dots:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Any idea what <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coinbase?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@coinbase<\/a> UK\u2019s reason is for dropping <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24ZEC&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$ZEC<\/a>; is it due to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/zcash?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#zcash<\/a>\u2019s optional support for private addressing being disliked by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HMRCgovuk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HMRCgovuk<\/a> Tax Authority?<\/p>\n<p>If so might it be more advantageous for all if instead Coinbase just dropped private addressing support themselves?<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The Village Idiot (@jimhashhq) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jimhashhq\/status\/1160240817165856770?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/electric-coin-company\/\">Electric Coin Company<\/a>, however, the company behind Zcash, this is an inaccurate assumption and in fact, the coin is \u201c100%\u201d compliant in this area and can still be purchased in the U.K. on one of the other exchanges allegedly contacted by the British tax authority, CEX.IO.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Those affected by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coinbase?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@coinbase<\/a> UK issues: this is limited to Coinbase UK only. UK residents can still buy\/sell Zcash through <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cex_io?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@cex_io<\/a>. No other exchanges in the UK affected. To pre-empt speculation, we confirm that Zcash is 100% compatible with UK regulations & KYC\/AML requirements.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Electric Coin Company (@ElectricCoinCo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ElectricCoinCo\/status\/1159877202470735873?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 9, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Electric Coin Company said it couldn\u2019t comment on the reason behind the coin\u2019s dismissal, however, with VP of Marketing Josh Swihart stepping in repeatedly to fend off questions and suggesting affected take up the issue with Coinbase.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jswihart?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@jswihart<\/a> Josh &#8211; Do you know why Coinbase is removing ZEC wallets from their exchange in the UK?<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jason McGee (@aquietinvestor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aquietinvestor\/status\/1159587116449447937?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 8, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Not KYC\/AML concerns, but something else?<\/h2>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time Coinbase has tread carefully around Zcash in the U.K., and despite the coin\u2019s apparent KYC\/AML compliance in the region, previous statements from the exchange suggest other regulatory hurdles could be the cause of the surprise delisting.<\/p>\n<p>When listed by the exchange in <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/buy-and-sell-zec-on-coinbase-ccd0bbb642a9\">December 2018<\/a>, ZEC support was not added at first for the New York and U.K. jurisdictions\u2014also without further explanation. Famously <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-usurp-united-states-cryptocurrency-exchanges\/\">compliance-heavy<\/a> Coinbase at the time appears to speak conservatively about its plans for the coin, coming just weeks after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/u-s-dhs-seeking-forensic-analytics-for-tracing-zcash-and-monero\/\">named Zcash<\/a> as one of the privacy cryptocurrencies it was looking to examine for potentially illicit transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, customers can send ZEC to Coinbase from both transparent and shielded addresses, but only send off Coinbase to transparent addresses.
