{"id":111452,"date":"2019-08-06T06:32:29","date_gmt":"2019-08-06T13:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=111452"},"modified":"2020-04-06T01:18:58","modified_gmt":"2020-04-06T00:18:58","slug":"524-million-bitcoin-withdrawn-bitmex-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/524-million-bitcoin-withdrawn-bitmex-july\/","title":{"rendered":"$524 million Bitcoin withdrawn from BitMEX in July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Net outflows show that more than half a billion dollars worth of Bitcoin left BitMEX in July, making the month the single-biggest for total customer withdrawals on record.<\/p>\n<p>With a net outflow of $524 million in BTC, July was the first month the exchange (the largest crypto margin trading platform by <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/exchanges\/bitmex\/\">daily volume<\/a>) had parted ways with more than $100 million in customer deposits.<\/p>\n<p>Outflows charted in terms of Bitcoin reveal a markedly similar trend, with more than 50,000 BTC leaving the Seychelles-registered derivatives exchange in July.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Denominating in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24BTC&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$BTC<\/a> shows the same story. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9v5COYxw3A\">pic.twitter.com\/9v5COYxw3A<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ceteris Paribus (@ceterispar1bus) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ceterispar1bus\/status\/1157979386223693824?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 4, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Are BitMEX customers getting cold feet?<\/h2>\n<p>The revelation comes on the heels of what just might be BitMEX\u2019s most turbulent month to date, stirred up by the discovery that the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CTFC) quietly <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/what-cftc-investigating-bitmex-could-mean-for-bitcoin-and-crypto-market\/\">started an investigation<\/a> into whether the non-US-registered platform has been illicitly allowing American residents to trade.<\/p>\n<p>News of the CTFC probe broke July 19, just days after a damning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.project-syndicate.org\/commentary\/cryptocurrency-exchanges-are-financial-scams-by-nouriel-roubini-2019-07\">op-ed<\/a> by Nouriel Roubini <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nouriel-roubini-accuses-bitmex-ceo-arthur-hayes-of-systematic-illegal-activities-in-latest-op-ed\/\">accusing BitMEX<\/a> of \u201csystematic illegal activity\u201d including money-laundering and dodging KYC\/AML regulations, seemingly spurred on by its author\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nouriel-roubini-lost-his-cool-during-debate-with-bitmex-ceo-arthur-hayes\/\">earlier, fiery debate<\/a> with BitMEX CEO Arthur Hayes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">They are hiding the whole video as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CryptoHayes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CryptoHayes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BitMEXdotcom?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BitMEXdotcom<\/a> got totally reckt for once since their daily biz model is to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BitmexRekt?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BitmexRekt<\/a> &quot;degenerate gamblers&quot; retail suckers with 100x leveraged toxic crypto derivatives.  These folks are worse than blood-sucking leeches. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UiJcn5Mfjf\">https:\/\/t.co\/UiJcn5Mfjf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nouriel Roubini (@Nouriel) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Nouriel\/status\/1148121711512084480?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 8, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Several members of the cryptosphere have stepped in to blame Hayes for BitMEX\u2019s poor performance in July, suggesting it was a mistake to engage such a dangerous adversary as Roubini in a high-profile <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nouriel-roubini-lost-his-cool-during-debate-with-bitmex-ceo-arthur-hayes\/\">debate<\/a>. As one commentator <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StackinBits\/status\/1158056430039175168\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Goes to show why Arthur would have been better suited not to stir the pot and maintain a low-profile. Instead he chose to instigate a pissing match with an egocentric, well connected, adversary of all things Bitcoin. Beyond foolish.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>BitMEX customers certainly appear to have been spooked by the announcement of the probe, with July 19 seeing a net outflow of 8200 BTC leave BitMEX, the second-largest day of the month for outflows.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/JtNqjktYVHZUQCuGgXHg6S4ai9aiN3IwzvWFjsLBuZnqtKAvl7DaSxdeP7RhddKGIHXx2yFt6XF8ZUUBquN3F8jvTuP-fiptE1z31X08gr_VhEo_-21hlRwxzIDAq8GFOFktg7SL\" alt=\"Inflow Outflow for BitMEX\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1012\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokenanalyst.io\/exchange\/btc\/bitmex\">TokenAnalyst<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Or moving to Binance?<\/h2>\n<p>Questions of regulatory scrutiny aside BitMEX could simply be losing custom to its newfound competitor, Binance, which as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-announces-futures-contracts-trading-platform\/\">CryptoSlate<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-announces-futures-contracts-trading-platform\/\">announced<\/a> plans to enter the leveraged derivatives space within months.<\/p>\n<p>Further research by Ceteris Paribus could support this theory, with Binance seeing significant inflows of BTC in June and July.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Daily <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/binance?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@binance<\/a> net <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24BTC&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$BTC<\/a> flows this year: Activity did a 180 in June.
