Following the announcement, XTZ jumped 16.4 percent while the altcoin markets overall remained stable.<\/p>\n<p>Tezos (XTZ) is a proof-of-work smart contract platform with built-in features for user governance. Using these governance features, Tezos is attempting to \u201cdemocratize\u201d protocol upgrades by incenting user participation.<\/p>\n<p>On July 30, 17:00 UTC Coinbase announced that it is adding Tezos to Coinbase Pro, the exchange\u2019s platform for active traders. An hour after the announcement the price shot up from $1.04 to $1.21, a 16.4 percent increase.<\/p>\n<p>At its peak within the hour, the XTZ token wicked to $1.26, a 21.9 percent increase from the formerly stable trading range between $1.00 and $1.04. Meanwhile, the overall altcoin markets were unchanged, only decreasing 0.15 percent\u2014suggesting that the price increase for XTZ was motivated by the news and not broader market movement.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1353px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/a-UMM127gfpRpaaKzV2NEiuacXnvnsr4EC6KIWHlZqousfY18l9GHrrvom3Mka7OE3IQxbKT6979ChbRvMjyLu3dr_ejgm11Zwm7DiS1s81AdGXYdm_mc4-wjPGjnFVTdtZb6d59\" alt=\"Tezos \/ Tether price chart\" width=\"1353\" height=\"839\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tradingview.com\/symbols\/XTZUSDT\">XTZ\/USDT<\/a> on TradingView<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Trading volume is also up substantially, increasing from a 7-day average of $5.6 million based on aggregate <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/coinmarketcap\">CoinMarketCap<\/a> data to the 24-hour volume of $10.7 million\u2014up 91.1 percent.<\/p>\n<h2>Tezos history<\/h2>\n<p>The Tezos platform launched with much fanfare, with its initial coin offering in July 2017 raising $232 million, one of the largest ICOs of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Following the ICO a <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/the-history-of-tezos-the-infamous-ico-trying-to-rebound-amidst-lawsuits-and-disputes\">major dispute<\/a> broke out between Tezos founder Johann Gevers and partners <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/arthur-breitman\/\">Arthur<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/kathleen-breitman\/\">Kathleen Breitman<\/a>\u2014the owners of Tezos\u2019 intellectual property rights.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the launch of the Tezos platform was delayed indefinitely. Token holders were outraged and many sought legal remedies for reimbursement of their funds, with limited success.
