The number and size of these entrants may indicate institutional demand for cryptocurrency is strong.<\/p>\n<p>This is further evidenced by a recent report from Grayscale, a cryptocurrency hedge fund, which <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/institutional-demand-for-bitcoin-and-ethereum-causes-grayscale-aum-to-nearly-triple-reduces-exposure-to-xrp\/\">tripled<\/a> its assets under management\u2014increasing from $926 million to $2.7 billion\u2014largely driven <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/institutional-demand-for-bitcoin-and-ethereum-causes-grayscale-aum-to-nearly-triple-reduces-exposure-to-xrp\/\">institutional demand<\/a> for Bitcoin. Many of the financial products these firms want to offer are still awaiting regulatory approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) or the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). Speculators <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MatiGreenspan\/status\/1149192686810910720?s=20\">believe<\/a> that unmet institutional demand will cause the price of BTC to surge once these products are approved.<\/p>\n<p>There is <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wall-street-trades-a-significant-portion-of-the-markets-bitcoin-futures\/\">other evidence<\/a> suggesting there is strong institutional demand. April <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wall-street-trades-a-significant-portion-of-the-markets-bitcoin-futures\/\">data<\/a> from the CME\u2019s show $563 million in volume on Apr. 4th while the top 10 crypto exchanges at the time traded $685 million, suggesting there is demand for Bitcoin exposure among institutional traders.<\/p>\n<p>The CME\u2019s futures are paper BTC contracts settled in dollars. Bakkt is attempting to change that with its <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bakkt-confirms-launch-of-physically-settled-bitcoin-futures\/\">flagship product<\/a>, globally traded futures with physical settlement, meaning futures contracts can be redeemed for the underlying Bitcoin at maturity rather than merely tracking its price.<\/p>\n<p>These contracts from Bakkt and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ledgerx-wins-cftc-approval-crypto-settled-bitcoin-futures\/\">LedgerX<\/a> may have a greater impact on Bitcoin spot prices than the currently available paper contracts by directly influencing supply. These contracts may also prove valuable to businesses, such as industrial crypto miners, who need to guarantee the future sale or purchase price of their BTC inventory.<\/p>\n<p>Bakkt\u2019s futures will go live once it receives <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/new-york-bitlicense-could-convince-the-cftc-to-greenlight-bakkt\">regulatory clearance<\/a> from the CFTC.
