{"id":106294,"date":"2019-05-24T15:47:06","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T22:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=106294"},"modified":"2019-11-07T02:28:46","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T02:28:46","slug":"bitcoin-cash-reportedly-suffered-51-attack-transactions-reversed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-cash-reportedly-suffered-51-attack-transactions-reversed\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin Cash reportedly suffered a 51% attack, transactions reversed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bitcoin Cash reportedly suffered a 51% attack following its May 15 scheduled hardfork upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>Following Bitcoin Cash\u2019s hardfork upgrade, an attacker <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-cash-exploit-cripples-network-hardfork\/\">exploited a vulnerability<\/a> in the update that added invalid transactions to the pool of unprocessed transactions (the Mempool). <a href=\"https:\/\/honest.cash\/kiarahpromise\/sigop-counting-4528\">One source<\/a> claims these were \u201cpoison\u201d transactions that made it so miners were unable to participate in mining.<\/p>\n<p>The exploit crippled the network for an hour and a half. The majority of miners were unable to participate in consensus, while those remaining were only able to mine mostly empty blocks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheCryptoconomy\/status\/1131962447823278080?s=20\">Another source<\/a> suggests that BTC.TOP opted to mine empty blocks to continue reaping mining rewards.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSince most other miners were offline at the time due to the exploit, BTC.TOP controlled over half of the Bitcoin Cash network hash power, allowing them to determine which blocks were accepted by the network,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheCryptoconomy\/status\/1131962447823278080?s=20\">said<\/a> Guy Swann, host of the Cryptoconomy Podcast.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>During the chaos, BTC.TOP\u2014potentially in collusion with another dominant mining pool, BTC.com\u2014conducted a \u201cnon consensus re-org.\u201d There are claims that the move constitutes a 51% attack on the Bitcoin Cash blockchain.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_106295\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106295\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-106295 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bitmex-research-51-attack-1024x887.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"887\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bitmex-research-51-attack-1024x887.png 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bitmex-research-51-attack-300x260.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bitmex-research-51-attack-768x665.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BitMEXResearch\/status\/1128721847988707329?s=20\">BitMEX Research<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The actions were said to have been motivated by the reclamation of previously unspendable BCH. A prior update on Bitcoin Cash made it so coins sent to particular addresses were unspendable. However, the May 16 hardfork changed that rule:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis upgrade will make an exemption for these coins and return them to the previous situation, where they are spendable\u2026 any miner can take the coins,\u201d stated the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/bitcoincashorg\/bitcoincash.org\/blob\/master\/spec\/2019-05-15-upgrade.md\">Bitcoin Cash GitHub<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An unknown miner then attempted to claim these previously unspendable coins, said Aaron van Wirdum, technical editor at Bitcoin Magazine.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen an unknown miner claimed these coins, the BTC.com and BTC.TOP pools coordinated [a] 51%-attack to return coins to original owners.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If verified, this could prove a major blow to Bitcoin Cash. \u201cThis basically kills any perception that Bitcoin Cash is \u2018decentralized, censorship-resistant money,\u201d said Swann.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/explained-51-percent-attacks-on-bitcoin-cryptocurrencies\/\">Read on<\/a> for the details on how 51% attacks are executed.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bitcoin Cash reportedly suffered a 51% attack following its May 15 scheduled hardfork upgrade.
