Private companies, giants in our industry and outside, made investments for &gt; 100m each. We are impressed.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What Does it Mean For Crypto?<\/h2>\n<p>Immediately after the statement of Ardoino was released, the bitcoin price spiked from around $7,000 to $7,100, followed by a substantial decline in the Bitfinex premium.<\/p>\n<p>On May 9, Larry Cermak reported that the premium of Bitfinex dropped drastically in a 24-hour span, indicating that traders see less risk in the crypto market.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bitfinex premium decreased drastically in the last 24 hours signaling that traders think there is way less risk now.<\/p>\n<p>Tether premium: 0.4%<br \/>Bitfinex premium: 1.2% <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fXidSHRYmH\">pic.twitter.com\/fXidSHRYmH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Larry Cermak (@lawmaster) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lawmaster\/status\/1126737974291341313?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 10, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In early May, after the office of the New York Attorney General (NYAG) filed a lawsuit against iFinex, the parent company of Bitfinex and Tether alleging Bitfinex of mismanaging $900 million of Tether\u2019s cash reserves, the number of traders selling Tether on Bitfinex for bitcoin spiked.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Letitia James <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/press-release\/attorney-general-james-announces-court-order-against-crypto-currency-company-under\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur investigation has determined that the operators of the \u2018Bitfinex\u2019 trading platform, who also control the \u2018tether\u2019 virtual currency, have engaged in a cover-up to hide the apparent loss of $850 million dollars of co-mingled client and corporate funds. New York state has led the way in requiring virtual currency businesses to operate according to the law.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As buy volumes began to rise rapidly, the price of bitcoin on Bitfinex increased, due to an intense sell-off of Tether.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/exploring-bitfinexs-emergency-plan-a-1-billion-initial-exchange-offering\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bitfinex-emergency-social-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"Exploring Bitfinex\u2019s emergency plan: a $1 billion initial exchange offering\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Related:\u00a0<a title=\"Exploring Bitfinex\u2019s emergency plan: a $1 billion initial exchange offering\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/exploring-bitfinexs-emergency-plan-a-1-billion-initial-exchange-offering\/\">Exploring Bitfinex\u2019s emergency plan: a $1 billion initial exchange offering<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, possibly due to the progress in the fundraising, the Bitfinex premium started to decline in the past several days, suggesting that traders have become more comfortable with the overall state of the crypto market.<\/p>\n<p>The newly obtained $1 billion would allow Bitfinex to recover the $900 million it \u201cloaned\u201d from Tether and slowly buy back LEO tokens it distributed to investors using the exchange\u2019s profits.<\/p>\n<p>After securing enough capital from major investors, Bitfinex is said to have provided an \u201copportunity\u201d to a larger audience to participate in the fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>Ardoino said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere is a small allocation left and we just prefer to share to small investors until there is time. We have a request from few big buyers to buy the few millions left once we close it. But we believed it's more fair to give opportunity to a larger audience.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Improving Sentiment<\/h2>\n<p>As the bitcoin price hit a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/altcoins-post-double-digit-gains-as-bitcoin-accelerates-past-7000\/\">new 2019 high<\/a> at $7,500 and the valuation of the crypto market surpassed $213 billion, the sentiment around the industry has noticeably improved in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Bitfinex still faces a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitfinex-tethers-cover-850-million-lost-funds\/\">pending lawsuit filed by the NYAG\u2019s office<\/a> and the potential outcome of the case remains uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>But, the fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) around Bitfinex and Tether is likely to subside in the near-term as the fundraising alleviates some of the pressure placed on Bitfinex.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to Paolo Ardoino, the chief technology officer (CTO) of Bitfinex, the crypto exchange has completed fundraising of $1 billion in tether (USDT).
