The registration is currently live.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nike has filed a trademark application for CRYPTOKICKS.<\/p>\n<p>The filing indicates that Nike is intending to launch a cryptocurrency called CRYPTOKICKS.<\/p>\n<p>Below is my analysis of the filing and its implications ?<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/nike?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#nike<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/cryptocurrency?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#cryptocurrency<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/82gAPlzrXy\">pic.twitter.com\/82gAPlzrXy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Josh Gerben (@JoshGerben) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoshGerben\/status\/1121127089120452608?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 24, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Background on Trademarks<\/h2>\n<p>According to the USPTO, a trademark is a word or symbol that identifies and differentiates the source of a good or service. Unlike patents and other intellectual property, registration for trademarks are not necessary for legal protection in the US so long as the mark is used actively in commerce.<\/p>\n<p>However, registration allows a corporation\u2014like Nike\u2014to gain the legal presumption of ownership over the mark nationwide, as well as exclusive rights to use the mark in connection to the wide array of goods and services it designated in the filing.<\/p>\n<h2>Details on the CRYPTOKICKS Registration<\/h2>\n<p>Nike\u2019s recent trademark alludes to several ventures the corporation is either currently pursuing or will pursue in the future.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103059\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103059\" style=\"width: 1021px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103059\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/nike-trademark-uspto.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1021\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/nike-trademark-uspto.png 1021w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/nike-trademark-uspto-300x147.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/nike-trademark-uspto-768x375.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1021px) 100vw, 1021px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nike's trademark in the USPTO's electronic database<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the filing, the company asserts the mark may be used for goods and services including\u2014cryptocurrency software and hardware wallets, crypto-collectibles and art, utility tokens, and software for managing networked IoT devices.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the company also alludes to a mobile app Nike is developing with an associated coin:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDownloadable computer software, namely, an electronic financial platform that accommodates multiple types of payment and debt transactions in an integrated mobile phone\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not only that, but the registration also mentions that the corporation has the right to use the mark in association with an online crypto marketplace featuring footwear and clothing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOnline marketplace services, namely, providing a marketplace for buyers and sellers of digital currency assets; Operating an online marketplace featuring footwear and clothing; on-line retail store services\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Corporations Stake Intellectual Property Claims<\/h2>\n<p>Nike is not the first company to stake a claim on crypto-related intellectual property. Companies ranging from Amazon, Mastercard, and Xerox<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/amazon-wins-two-blockchain-related-patents-cryptography-and-distributed-storage\/\"> have filed patents<\/a> and other intellectual property claims within the blockchain industry.<\/p>\n<p>The growth in patents among some of the world\u2019s largest corporations could be a positive signal for growth and recognition of crypto. However, these intellectual property claims also contrast sharply with the open-source and censorship adverse community that bitcoin has kindled.<\/p>\n<p>As the industry grows, corporations like Nike will find ways to commercialize blockchain technology and profit from the enthusiasm around the technology.
