After hinting at a possible Ethereum integration earlier in the week, Discord CEO Jason Citron now says the social network has “no current plans” to integrate crypto into its platform.

  • The Nov. 8 tweet previewed Metamask and WalletConnector integrations on Discord’s platform, which sparked outrage across its community over environmental concerns for Ethereum’s energy usage. It came in response to a newsletter written by entrepreneur Packy McCormick that looked at Discord’s potential in the Web 3 space.
  • Despite Discord’s popularity among crypto communities globally, many users took to Twitter and Reddit threatening to boycott the platform if crypto features were integrated.
  • According to gaming curator Ryan Brown, the tweet even spurred a wave of paid subscription cancellations and internal conflicts among Discord’s staff.
  • Citron ended his statement by saying, “Web 3 has lots of good but also lots of problems we need to work through at our scale. More soon.”
