Ripple plan to make its software open source on September 26
Ripple, OpenCoin's decentralised payment system and currency, is to be open sourced at the end of September.

OpenCoin, the company behind the Ripple payment system, has announced that it should finally be made available via an open source license next week.
Ripple, which features both a payment network and its own ripple currency
However, the founders (who retained 20% of the entirely pre-mined currency for themselves) have consistently said that they planned to open source it at some point in the future.
“We're getting close to finishing the list of issues that we wanted to have fixed before open sourcing," explained OpenCoin CTO Stefan Thomas. “This includes improvements to the peering code so that the network can handle larger numbers of nodes. If we had open sourced without these changes, we would have likely sustained significant network downtime."
Most elements of Ripple were already available under open source license, including the JavaScript client, and all other components. But the bone of contention was the actual network node, which runs the servers used for Ripple gateways.
It is this software, called rippled, that will be released under what is known as an ISC licence. Written by the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), it is said to be similar to the Simplified BSD license, and has been accepted by the Free Software Foundation. Interested parties will be able to download the source from the ripple page on GitHub.
“OpenCoin Inc is a convenient vehicle to bootstrap this vision, but the network needs to eventually stand on its own," said Thomas. “For that, we need a developer community who can carry on the development, a network of validators (gateways, merchants, traders and other stakeholders) who continue operating nodes, and most importantly, a vibrant economy that is using the network to process transactions."
Taking the Ripple system open source at this point makes good political sense for OpenCoin. It is running its first developer conference at Money2020, the emerging payments and financial services conference, in Las Vegas on October 10. The firm will be describing the internal workings of Ripple, and running demonstrations of integration with merchants and gateways.
This integration is perhaps one of the biggest commercial challenges facing Ripple at the moment, said Jered Kenna, CEO of Tradehill, a bitcoin and ripple exchange for high net worth individuals, which right now is off-line, due to banking issues.
“Open sourcing the code builds confidence in both the Ripple network and OpenCoin's stewardship. It also helps exchanges and money services business evaluate what it means to become a Ripple gateway," said Kenna.
Current Ripple gateways include US-based SnapSwap, Ripple China and Ripplecn from China, and Justcoin and Bitstamp from Europe.

KuCoin Hits Record Market Share as 2025 Volumes Outpace Crypto Market

KuCoin captured a record share of centralised exchange volume in 2025, with more than $1.25tn traded as its volumes grew faster than the wider crypto market.
What to know:
- KuCoin recorded over $1.25 trillion in total trading volume in 2025, equivalent to an average of roughly $114 billion per month, marking its strongest year on record.
- This performance translated into an all-time high share of centralised exchange volume, as KuCoin’s activity expanded faster than aggregate CEX volumes, which slowed during periods of lower market volatility.
- Spot and derivatives volumes were evenly split, each exceeding $500 billion for the year, signalling broad-based usage rather than reliance on a single product line.
- Altcoins accounted for the majority of trading activity, reinforcing KuCoin’s role as a primary liquidity venue beyond BTC and ETH at a time when majors saw more muted turnover.
- Even as overall crypto volumes softened mid-year, KuCoin maintained elevated baseline activity, indicating structurally higher user engagement rather than short-lived volume spikes.

Bitcoin remains coiled under $88,500 as gold tops $5,000, silver gives back gains

Bitcoin traded lower alongside most major tokens as investors favored gold and silver ahead of the Federal Reserve decision and a heavy week of Magnificent Seven earnings.
What to know:
- Bitcoin slipped to about $88,400 in early-week trading, extending a roughly 4 percent decline over the past week as major cryptocurrencies softened.
- The token’s underperformance versus rising equities and surging gold underscores that crypto is trading more like a high-beta risk asset than a safe-haven hedge.
- Traders are cautious and volumes muted ahead of Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision and a wave of Big Tech earnings, events seen as key catalysts for bitcoin’s next move.
