About Sapien
Sapien (SAPIEN) is the protocol token used within Sapien’s onchain system for coordinating and validating human-generated AI training data. It supports staking-based task access, rewards for contributors and validators, slashing-backed quality enforcement, reputation-linked progression, and an intended transition towards DAO governance. Sapien was co-founded by Trevor Koverko, Kelly Ryan, and Henry Chen, and is led by CEO Rowan Stone.
Sapien (SAPIEN) is the protocol token used by Sapien, an onchain system that organises human work for the creation and validation of AI training data. The protocol uses a model described as “Proof of Quality”, where economic incentives and peer review replace centralised quality control. SAPIEN is the unit through which participation, accountability, and coordination are expressed within the system.
SAPIEN underpins the economic and coordination layer of the Sapien protocol.
- Staking: contributors stake SAPIEN as collateral to access tasks. The amount and duration of staking are used to gate task complexity and influence reward conditions.
- Rewards: contributors and validators earn rewards for completed and approved work. Rewards can be configured as a mix of SAPIEN and stablecoins such as USDC.
- Quality enforcement: completed work is peer-reviewed. Poor-quality or malicious behaviour can lead to penalties, including slashing of staked SAPIEN and restrictions on future participation.
- Reputation and progression: performance history and peer feedback, combined with staking requirements, determine contributor roles and access to higher-responsibility tasks.
- Governance direction: Sapien outlines a gradual transition towards token-holder governance via a DAO, covering protocol parameters, treasury decisions, and the approval of new task categories.
Sapien was co-founded by Trevor Koverko (CSO), Kelly Ryan (CTO), and Henry Chen (COO), with Rowan Stone serving as CEO.

- Rowan Stone (CEO): co-creator of Base (Coinbase L2), former COO of Totle (acquired by Coinbase), and co-founder of Horizen Labs and Launch Code Capital.
- Trevor Koverko (CSO, Co-founder): founder of Polymath, builder of the Polymesh blockchain for real-world assets, and founder of Tokens.com.
- Kelly Ryan (CTO, Co-founder): product and engineering leader with experience at FastAF and a background in Physics from the University of Waterloo.
- Henry Chen (COO, Co-founder): former COO of Haller.ai, with growth experience at companies including ClickUp, SAS, and Xsolla.
Sapien has raised a $10.5 million seed round backed by firms such as Variant, Primitive Ventures, Animoca, Yield Guild Games, and Orange DAO, and works alongside partners including Airtm, GIG, Intract, KGen, Mises, Recall, Veera, and Worldcoin.
