{"id":8218,"date":"2022-07-08T19:47:47","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T19:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ci02a5b42a200026b6"},"modified":"2022-07-08T19:47:47","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T19:47:47","slug":"first-female-bitcoin-core-maintainer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/first-female-bitcoin-core-maintainer","title":{"rendered":"Gloria Zhao Becomes First Female Bitcoin Core Maintainer, Pieter Wuille Steps Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>Developer Gloria Zhao has become the first known woman to join the select cohort of Bitcoin Core maintainers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoincore.org\/en\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin Core<\/a> maintainers have commit permissions to the repository and are responsible for merging contributions from other developers onto the codebase. <\/p>\n<p>In the context of software development through versioning systems such as GitHub, to commit means to add or change code in a project. Usually, open-source project owners are the ones with commit access, who get to decide whose contribution can be added to \u2013 merged into \u2013 the project. In Bitcoin Core, that role is decentralized through a small but diverse set of developers \u2013 the maintainers.<\/p>\n<p>Zhao achieved the Bitcoin Core maintainer status on Thursday as her <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/bitcoin\/bitcoin\/pull\/25524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pull request<\/a> (PR) to add her PGP key fingerprint into the trusted keys file was accepted by the developer community and merged by now-fellow maintainer <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/culture\/marco-falke-bitcoin-network\">Marco Falke<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think glozow [Gloria Zhao] is a good fit for maintainership and her expertise in mempool and policy makes those areas a good focus for her,\u201d Bitcoin developer Andrew Chow said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/bitcoin\/bitcoin\/pull\/25524#issuecomment-1172466528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reply comment<\/a> to Zhao\u2019s PR. \u201cThe key fingerprint matches the key I have signed for glozow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zhao\u2019s addition to the group came on the same day as long-time maintainer Pieter Wuille <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/bitcoin\/bitcoin\/pull\/25568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stepped down from the role<\/a>.
