{"id":6943,"date":"2022-09-22T22:45:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T22:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ci02abf674e0002624"},"modified":"2025-01-28T14:50:34","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T14:50:34","slug":"improving-bitcoin-nodes-ui-and-ux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/improving-bitcoin-nodes-ui-and-ux","title":{"rendered":"How Improving The UI And UX Of Bitcoin Nodes Could Benefit Everyone"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p><em>This is an opinion editorial by Ram, a twenty year old student, soldier and storyteller.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Imagine this:<\/p>\n<p><em>Your baby girl is fiddling with her laptop, and she\u2019s yelling, \u201cWow!\u201d and \u201cOh!\u201d You wonder what\u2019s going on. Is it a cartoon? Is it anime? Why\u2019s she so excited?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As I, a twenty year old, write this in Singapore, <a href=\"https:\/\/bitnodes.io\/dashboard\/90d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about 15,000<\/a> active Bitcoin nodes are estimated to be running all over the world. These nodes store the Bitcoin database in part\/in its entirety. <\/p>\n<p>With 15,000 computers storing the same database all over the world, repeatedly transmitting new transactions and new blocks to one another, it\u2019s practically impossible for any one player to pop by and change the record of what happened. <\/p>\n<p>But when talking about Bitcoin\u2019s future as a decentralized currency, Elon Musk said this:<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/35_image3.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<aside>\n<p><em>\u201cThe reality is, the average person is not going to run a bitcoin node.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zwx_7XAJ3p0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Elon Musk, B World Conference 2021<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>I agree with Elon. But let me clarify.<\/p>\n<p>Elon was referring to a validating node, which is quite simple to set up. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mining nodes and validation nodes serve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blocksize-War-controls-Bitcoins-protocol\/dp\/B08YQMC2WM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different functions<\/a>. (TLDR: mining nodes consume electricity to create \u201cblocks\u201d of data, validating nodes check whether the info in those blocks is accurate. Nowadays, mining nodes are called miners, whereas validating nodes are simply called nodes.) Both contribute to decentralization.<\/li>\n<li>Setting up a validation node will not burn your house down due to high electricity usage. <\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s actually easy and requires zero technical expertise.<\/li>\n<li>In fact, it costs just <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptocoached.ngontinh24.com\/articles\/how-much-does-a-node-cost-to-run\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">~10 cents<\/a> per day from electricity. <\/li>\n<li>At the moment, you need less than <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.org\/en\/full-node#configuration-tuning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7GB<\/a> of storage space to set up a pruned validation node (in which you hold only part of the Bitcoin transaction database, but still contribute to decentralization). <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, the average person is not aware of the above.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, <em>Bitcoin remains the most decentralized cryptocurrency on the planet<\/em>. 15,000 nodes in the context of a cryptocurrency is great, and proof of Bitcoin\u2019s decentralization was demonstrated during the blocksize wars. <\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s frame the context differently. Over <a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/global-digital-overview#:~:text=A%20total%20of%205.03%20billion,12%20months%20to%20July%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5,000,000,000<\/a> people have access to the internet today. Suddenly, 15,000 nodes look tiny. A lot more than 15,000 folks probably have computers with 7GB to spare. Many may even have an old laptop sitting in the garage!<\/p>\n<p>For Bitcoin to gain wider and faster adoption moving forward, its decentralization must be continually emphasized. One way to do this is by encouraging regular folks to run Bitcoin validating nodes. <\/p>\n<p>We aren\u2019t talking enough about this today. <\/p>\n<h2>Achieving This Via Node UI And UX Improvements<\/h2>\n<p>Even in exchanges and payment apps, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/punk6529\/status\/1564974643861127168?s=20&amp;t=gG57tHQmzgkh3gZbombZtg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UI and UX are arguably being sidelined<\/a>. When it comes to nodes, the UI and UX discussion is practically non-existent. <\/p>\n<p>Remember: the biggest company in the world today got to where it is by relentlessly focusing on UI and UX. That company\u2019s market cap is currently about <a href=\"https:\/\/companiesmarketcap.com\/assets-by-market-cap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">six times bigger than Bitcoin\u2019s. <\/a><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/117_image1.png\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/22_image4.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>Bitcoin might not be a company, but the same principle applies. It boils down to making things more intuitive.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to setting up a validating node, make things simpler. And simpler. And simpler. Installing Bitcoin Core should feel like installing a chrome extension. Or an app from Google Play. And suddenly, we\u2019ll have people realizing: \u201cHey, this node thingy is actually super simple!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let me clarify: setting up a validating node is already simple. But simplicity and perceived simplicity are different things. Today, perceived simplicity requires effortlessness. <\/p>\n<p>Next, let\u2019s talk about how running a validating node should feel. <\/p>\n<p>Take block explorer websites.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/83_image2.png\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>Technically, any of this info can be found on any full validating node. It\u2019s just less intuitive and requires some technical knowledge. The average Joe won\u2019t acquire that knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>So, improve the UI and UX. Superimpose the block explorer websites\u2019 interface on top of the node program. Take it a step further. Let users see how many nodes they\u2019re transmitting data to, how many blocks they\u2019ve helped validate thus far, any temporary chain splits. Simpler. More interactive. And yet effortless. I\u2019m sure there\u2019ll be plenty of ideas on creating a fun UI and UX based on the blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>And UI and UX aren\u2019t just important for increased decentralization. They can change the very manner in which people get into Bitcoin. <\/p>\n<p>For illustration\u2019s sake, here\u2019s what I imagine the typical pathway of someone who gets into Bitcoin:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Hears about cryptocurrencies as a way to make fiat \u2192 gets into altcoins \u2192 gets into Bitcoin \u2192 interested in Bitcoin \u2192 goes down the rabbit hole \u2192 believes in Bitcoin \u2192 sets up a validating node.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This pathway is just one of many. But here\u2019s my point: most of the time, setting up a node happens quite <em>late<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what an improved and intuitive node UI and UX could change that pathway into:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Hears about cryptocurrencies as a way to make fiat \u2192 decides to install a Bitcoin validating node to get a taste of crypto\u2019s value proposition \u2192 learns via interacting with the blockchain \u2192 maybe even has fun \u2192 interested in Bitcoin \u2192 believes in Bitcoin \u2192 tells more folks to install a validating node \u2192 spreads word; process loops.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>A validating node is an open invitation from Bitcoin to new folks, that necessitates zero risk-taking. UI and UX improvements will market it as such. <\/em>They\u2019ll propagate learning via interacting with the Bitcoin network. Education will come straight from the blockchain. Videos and articles, after all, can only do so much! <\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple more UI and UX benefits: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It attracts non-technical folks to Bitcoin. Yes, Bitcoin is the most decentralized cryptocurrency on the planet. But the folks running validating nodes are still a limited set largely drawn from tech and finance communities. Let\u2019s bring over folks from other communities, too. An immediate thought is NFT designers transitioning to working on Bitcoin\u2019s UI and UX.<\/li>\n<li>They reduce the inherent risks from centralized block explorer websites.<\/li>\n<li>This would publicize Bitcoin, the payments system. You can argue over Bitcoin the currency, but Bitcoin the payments system is incredibly hard to refute, even through the lens of mainstream economics. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this juncture, it\u2019s worth mentioning that increased decentralization could potentially bring about certain disadvantages, too. Typical democracy problems. Decentralization among technocrats has its pros, too. But that\u2019s another discussion. <\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is: we need to be talking more about this! Much of the world still deeply misunderstands Bitcoin. The fact that the \u201cBitcoin is bad for the climate\u201d argument has gotten so much traction is painful evidence. And even we Bitcoiners, all at very different depths of the rabbit hole, can benefit from easier interactions with the blockchain. <\/p>\n<p>So talk about this in your Telegrams, Discords and of course, on Twitter. Is it feasible? Does it make sense? Is it a waste of time? Is it being actively worked on?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s return to the story from the start of this piece:<\/p>\n<p><em>Your baby girl is fiddling with her laptop, and she yells \u201cWow!\u201d and \u201cOh!\u201d You walk over and see a new block being added to a chain of blocks preceding it, in real-time. You see one chain becoming two, until the chain on top becomes longer and longer and the chain below vanishes into flames. Your girl claps.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now that, folks, is a vision worth chasing. <\/p>\n<p><em>This is a guest post by Ram.
