{"id":5158,"date":"2023-02-14T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ci02b769fb6001278b"},"modified":"2023-02-14T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T13:00:00","slug":"bitcoiners-are-fixing-a-fragmented-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/culture\/bitcoiners-are-fixing-a-fragmented-world","title":{"rendered":"Building On Human Ingenuity, Bitcoiners Are Fixing The Fragmented World"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p><em>This is an opinion editorial by Nozomi Hayase, Ph.D., who has a background in psychology and human development.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the middle of January, global leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/davos-2022-jet-emissions-equaled-co2-output-of-350000-cars\/442943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flocked<\/a> in their private jets to a luxury ski resort in the Swiss town of Davos for the annual conference of the World Economic Forum (WEF).<\/p>\n<p>Under the theme \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/press\/2023\/01\/cooperation-in-a-fragmented-world-addressing-pressing-crises-tackling-future-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cooperation In A Fragmented World<\/a>,\u201d 52 heads of state and many corporate CEOs, along with celebrities and prominent social activists, talked about how to manage the risks that we will be facing in the next decade. Issues such as costs of living and climate change, along with the war in Ukraine, were placed at or near the top of the agenda.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Alexa, please define messiah complex?<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/wef23?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#wef23<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2ssKKTZueR\">pic.twitter.com\/2ssKKTZueR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; James Melville \ud83d\ude9c (@JamesMelville) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamesMelville\/status\/1615628818311532544?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 18, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Climate Envoy John Kerry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/world\/john-kerry-applauds-fellow-davos-attendees-as-extraterrestrial-for-wanting-to-save-the-planet\/ar-AA16rzW2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praised<\/a> his fellow participants, saying \u201cIt&#8217;s pretty extraordinary that we \u2014 a select group of human beings \u2026 are able to sit in a room and come together and actually talk about saving the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the opening ceremony of the five-day planning meeting, Klaus Schwab, executive chairman of WEF, <a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=vqjm35iZ9OA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remarked<\/a>, \u201cThrough collective responsibility, innovation, human good will and ingenuity, we have a capacity to turn challenges into opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>CBDCs And Programmable Money<\/h2>\n<p>One of the key WEF initiatives aims to strengthen global cooperation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2023\/01\/the-global-collaboration-village-davos-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creating<\/a> a collaborative village on Metaverse, with the help of Microsoft. By engaging all stakeholders of society, their plan is to create a new digitized economy.<\/p>\n<p>Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) play a critical role in their projected infrastructure. These digital forms of fiat money, overseen by a country\u2019s central bank, give issuers total control, as they can monitor and restrict transactions. Combined with a worldwide adoption of digital IDs, CBDCs can be used to create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2022\/11\/22\/1063605\/china-announced-a-new-social-credit-law-what-does-it-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China-style social credit scoring system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, Bo Li, speaking of how CBDCs can grant governments control over what people can and cannot buy with their own money.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Pwl6TbzmmQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/Pwl6TbzmmQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; \u23f3 (@digitaltimezone) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/digitaltimezone\/status\/1615924959338979330?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 19, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Under the slogan of \u201cfinancial inclusion,\u201d the IMF now <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/digitaltimezone\/status\/1615924959338979330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushes<\/a> CBDCs as a central piece of infrastructure. This United Nations\u2019 specialized financial agency aims to make centralized digital currencies become instruments for the government and private sectors to implement targeted policies such as consumption coupons and welfare programs.<\/p>\n<p>Major technology companies and financial institutions are also coming on board. At the WEF annual meeting, Bank of America <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/bank-america-says-cbdcs-future-121752086.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praised<\/a> CBDCs as the future of money. IBM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/business\/2023\/01\/17\/cbdcs-are-the-future-of-money-ibm-exec-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embraced<\/a> them too. But as the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eddieconroy10\/status\/1615527555964211201?s=43&amp;t=Ras2lSB_grCzslLJf98xSg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hand-picked global elites<\/a> in Davos, with a message of climate emergency, now try to bring the public into their universal digital payment network, we have an alternative.<\/p>\n<h2>Pleb-Powered Network<\/h2>\n<p>Created in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis, bitcoin is the hardest form of money that we have ever seen. By eliminating a need to trust a central authority, this breakthrough of computer science enables censorship resistance. <\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin\u2019s innovative economic incentives, aligning everyone\u2019s self interests, has organically begun to re-engineer the economy. We are now seeing this unfold in the Southern United States. Texas <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/business\/texas-a-mecca-for-bitcoin-mining\">has recently become<\/a> the Bitcoin capital of the world. The abundant energy and the low electricity rates (the majority coming from renewable sources), along with friendly regulations, are turning that state into a global mining hub. This has helped to accelerate energy innovation and generate a skilled workforce.<\/p>\n<p>By celebrating the birth of this freedom money, Bitcoiners began to link one another. Similar trends are happening all around the world. <\/p>\n<h2>El Salvador\u2019s Economic Liberty <\/h2>\n<p>In El Salvador, even before the country officially adopted Bitcoin, ordinary people have been working together to build on top of Bitcoin. In a small surf town with a population of 3,000, backed by a donation of bitcoin from an early adopter (who wishes to remain anonymous), the project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitcoinbeach.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin Beach<\/a> was launched to create a resilient local economy.<\/p>\n<p>Those grassroots efforts in El Zonte inspired El Salvador to become the first nation to legalize bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021. Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, has now become one of the most notable Bitcoiners. At 41 years old, he understands the significance of this invention. <\/p>\n<p>Adam Back, a cryptographer who was cited in Satoshi Nakamoto\u2019s Bitcoin white paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adam3us\/status\/1492907242475118594?s=43&amp;t=1WzoosQ8RlOxbu7ZurVNUg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledged<\/a> El Salvador\u2019s Bitcoin adoption as a genuine \u201cself-conceived state orange-pilling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bukele, who has an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opinion_polling_on_the_Nayib_Bukele_presidency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approval rating of more than 80%<\/a>, aims to create financial inclusion by expanding the freedom that Bitcoin enables, seeing this as the birthright of each individual. It is on its way toward freedom. The president recently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nayibbukele\/status\/1617700039534731264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that the country made a full debt payment of $800 million despite mainstream media saying it would default because of its bitcoin investments.<\/p>\n<h2>The Bukele Effect <\/h2>\n<p>In the crisis of Western liberal democracy triggered by the corruption of governments, the world is now seeing great leadership arising from a tiny country of Central America, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/world-population\/el-salvador-population\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">population of about 6.5 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Para ser como ustedes, tenemos que hacer lo que ustedes hacen, no lo que ustedes dicen\u2026<\/p>\n<p>To be like you, we have to do what you do, not what you tell us to do\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QfSo3MKkyD\">pic.twitter.com\/QfSo3MKkyD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nayib Bukele (@nayibbukele) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nayibbukele\/status\/1619886476350595073?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 30, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The volcano blonde, fairy godmother and keeper of the vision, Stacy Herbert, together with her partner Max Keiser, has been helping orange-pill the world. As a new resident of El Salvador, she now focuses on helping El Salvador\u2019s efforts for Bitcoin adoption.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on \u201cBitfinex Talks,\u201d Herbert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vkq9biJPMdQ&amp;t=961s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a> Bukele as a father of hyperbitcoinization and talked about his art of statesmanship. Characterizing him as a second layer on top of Bitcoin, she explained how the president brought laws to protect the rights of his people.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">People in E Salvador are very proud to see the roads paved, water service upgraded, schools built, medical facilities upgraded, and hope for the future.  El Salvador is safe to live in, and there are reasons to stay home rather than go to the US. The country that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/262963\/ranking-the-20-countries-with-the-most-murders-per-100-000-inhabitants\/#:~:text=El%20Salvador%20saw%20a%20murder,several%20Latin%20American%20cities%2C%20St.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had the world&#8217;s highest homicide rates<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/elsalvadorinenglish.com\/2022\/10\/19\/latin-americans-believe-that-el-salvador-is-the-country-with-the-least-corruption-in-the-region\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is now quickly transforming itself<\/a> into becoming the place where everyone wants to be.<\/p>\n<h2>Human Good Will<\/h2>\n<p>The economic liberty secured by Bitcoin, then furthered by Bukele, has begun to enable widespread, human good will. As the path for economic prosperity has opened, capital has begun to flow into this previously-impoverished Central American nation. It is now fueling innovation and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>Using Bitcoin as a powerful philanthropic tool, companies can engage in charitable assistance to provide services for those in need. The government has established a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bitcoinofficesv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC)<\/a>. It <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bitfinex.com\/announcements\/el-salvadors-historic-digital-asset-securities-law-passes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has recently passed <\/a>digital securities law that serves as landmark legislation establishing a legal framework for all digital assets that are not bitcoin, as well as those issued on Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>The relentless optimism that is growing in this Bitcoin country is now bringing people together from all around the world.<\/p>\n<p>On January 30, 2023, Keiser and Herbet, the exuberant, OG Bitcoin couple, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stacyherbert\/status\/1618045045428609025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hosted<\/a> an event in El Zonte to celebrate El Salvador\u2019s victory. Tickets were sold out, with over 100 people on a waiting list. These funds will support the world\u2019s first Bitcoin diploma project. <\/p>\n<p>This kind of community collaboration brings people joy and love. Inspiring memes and the arts, it is enlivening culture, giving birth to a new global civil society. <\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin can fix our fragmented world. Backed by human creativity, it begins to transform an economy that is driven by greed and selfish ambition into one which carries an altruistic impulse that promotes human welfare.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we, the Bitcoiners, the network of sovereign individuals, can show the rest of the world how we can exercise shared responsibility. With innovation, good will and ingenuity, we can meet challenges to create life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for all people.<\/p>\n<p><em>This is a guest post by Nozomi Hayase.
