Privacy is not secrecy.<br>A private matter is something one doesn&#8217;t want the whole world to know, but a secret matter is something one doesn&#8217;t want anybody to know.<br>Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world.\u201d<br>\u2014&nbsp;<em>Eric Hughes, \u201cA Cypherpunk\u2019s Manifesto\u201d (1993)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cp-md-0--strong-it-s-all-about-privacy-strong-\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptpad.fr\/#cp-md-0--strong-it-s-all-about-privacy-strong-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><strong>It\u2019s All About Privacy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<em>The Cypherpunk Manifesto<\/em>,&nbsp;<strong>privacy<\/strong>&nbsp;is mentioned twenty-four times.<br>It is the&nbsp;<strong>central theme<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>foundation<\/strong>, and the&nbsp;<strong>driving purpose<\/strong>&nbsp;of the entire call to action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, in popular discussions, people often focus on a single line:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCypherpunks write code.\u201d<br>\u2014&nbsp;<em>Hughes, 1993<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That focus usually comes from those of us who&nbsp;<em>do<\/em>&nbsp;write code \u2014 and we understand that the line means Cypherpunks write code&nbsp;<strong>to protect privacy<\/strong>.<br>But this narrow focus leaves out the rest of the Cypherpunk community \u2014 the broad majority who also play essential roles in achieving that goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cp-md-0--strong-privacy-needs-everyone-s-cooperation-strong-\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptpad.fr\/#cp-md-0--strong-privacy-needs-everyone-s-cooperation-strong-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><strong>Privacy Needs Everyone\u2019s Cooperation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor privacy to be widespread it must be part of a social contract&#8230;<br>Privacy only extends so far as the cooperation of one&#8217;s fellows in society.\u201d<br>\u2014&nbsp;<em>Hughes, 1993<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cypherpunks&nbsp;<strong>don\u2019t just write code<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Code is meaningless without users, advocates, and educators \u2014 and, at times,&nbsp;<strong>privacy-focused lawyers<\/strong>&nbsp;to defend those who write it.<br>If only coders are considered Cypherpunks, we create a smaller, more vulnerable anonymity set \u2014 easier to target, easier to silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We should want&nbsp;<strong>some<\/strong>&nbsp;Cypherpunks to write code.<br>But we should also want Cypherpunks who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Write<\/strong>&nbsp;about privacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speak<\/strong>&nbsp;about privacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make art, music, and media<\/strong>&nbsp;about privacy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cp-md-0--strong-privacy-needs-people-who-fight-anti-privacy-regulation-strong-\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptpad.fr\/#cp-md-0--strong-privacy-needs-people-who-fight-anti-privacy-regulation-strong-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><strong>Privacy Needs People Who Fight Anti-Privacy Regulation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCypherpunks deplore regulations on cryptography, for encryption is fundamentally a private act.\u201d<br>\u2014&nbsp;<em>Hughes, 1993<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also need Cypherpunks who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lobby<\/strong>&nbsp;against anti-privacy legislation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defend<\/strong>&nbsp;digital rights in court<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lead<\/strong>&nbsp;organizations that uphold privacy principles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cp-md-0--strong-beyond-code-the-broader-cypherpunk-mission-strong-\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptpad.fr\/#cp-md-0--strong-beyond-code-the-broader-cypherpunk-mission-strong-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><strong>Beyond Code: The Broader Cypherpunk Mission<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cypherpunks build&nbsp;<strong>digital<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>analog<\/strong>&nbsp;tools alike \u2014 from encryption software to the physical practices of confidentiality and discretion. They also require cypherpunks to design systems for actual use cases, test software, build testing infrastructure, manage projects, document, and&nbsp;<strong>educate<\/strong>&nbsp;on privacy tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an ideal world,&nbsp;<em>everyone<\/em>&nbsp;strives to be a Cypherpunk in the way their skills and passions best serve the cause of privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cp-md-0--strong-manifesto-update-quot-kid-gloves-or-megaphones-quot-hughes-1996-strong-\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptpad.fr\/#cp-md-0--strong-manifesto-update-quot-kid-gloves-or-megaphones-quot-hughes-1996-strong-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><strong>Manifesto Update, &#8220;Kid Gloves or Megaphones&#8221; (Hughes, 1996)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCode alone doesn\u2019t cut it. Not code alone, not code widely distributed, not even code widely used. Some measure of toleration in society for activities conducted in private is&nbsp;<em>necessary<\/em>&nbsp;for long-term success.\u201d<br>\u2014&nbsp;<em>Eric Hughes, \u201cKid Gloves or Megaphones,\u201d 1996<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three years after writing&nbsp;<em>A Cypherpunk\u2019s Manifesto<\/em>, Eric Hughes revisited that same &#8220;Cyperpunks write code&#8221; focus. In a message to the Cypherpunks mailing list, he reminded the community that&nbsp;<strong>privacy cannot survive in code alone<\/strong>. Privacy needs public understanding and social tolerance. This message reads almost like a Cypherpunk Manifesto update or bug fix. And yet, people still focus on that single &#8220;Cyperpunks write code&#8221; line from the 1993 manifesto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hughes warned that if privacy tools exist only in the shadows, society will turn against them. Without transparency, trust collapses; without trust,&nbsp;<strong>privacy becomes marginal<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 something for outlaws, not citizens. He saw clearly that&nbsp;<strong>social consensus is the real encryption key<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnless there is a public consensus that people generally should be able to use their own cryptography, then such use will become marginalized. Legislatures will outlaw, the public will disapprove, and vigilantes will hunt down improper use.\u201d<br>\u2014&nbsp;<em>Hughes, 1996<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not enough to build strong code; we must also build&nbsp;<strong>strong narratives<\/strong>&nbsp;that defend it in public. The Cypherpunk mission isn\u2019t to hide \u2014 it\u2019s to&nbsp;<strong>speak up<\/strong>, The movement survives not by retreating into encrypted caves, but by carrying the message outward \u2014 loud, human, and unashamed. That\u2019s how privacy wins: not just with math, but with megaphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would add, in whatever way you choose to speak up within whatever your skills, strengths, and constraints are in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cp-md-0--strong-more-cypherpunks-more-privacy-strong-\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptpad.fr\/#cp-md-0--strong-more-cypherpunks-more-privacy-strong-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><strong>More Cypherpunks, More Privacy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Cypherpunks are actively engaged in making the networks safer for privacy.<br>Let us proceed together apace. Onward.\u201d<br>\u2014&nbsp;<em>Hughes, 1993<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Networks are not just computer systems \u2014 they are&nbsp;<strong>people, places, and communities<\/strong>. Privacy depends on the cooperation of everyone within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Everyone is needed.
