{"id":26155,"date":"2015-07-28T22:19:36","date_gmt":"2015-07-28T22:19:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ci027cfe63f00126c3"},"modified":"2015-07-28T22:19:36","modified_gmt":"2015-07-28T22:19:36","slug":"ethereum-project-opens-new-frontier-developers-1438121976","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/business\/ethereum-project-opens-new-frontier-developers-1438121976","title":{"rendered":"Ethereum Project Opens Up New \u2018Frontier\u2019 for Developers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ethereum-project-opens-up-new-frontier-for-developers.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>You could hear a pin drop at the recent Toronto DEC_TECH conference as Vitalik Buterin told a standing-room-only crowd about his remarkable journey to build Ethereum \u2013 a decentralized open source peer-to-peer web-based platform \u2013 that he calls \u201cthe foundational platform for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buterin has been called a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3047462\/the-humans-who-dream-of-companies-that-wont-need-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crypto-anarchist visionary<\/a>,\u201d and at the age of 21 he has already beat out Facebook\u2019s Mark Zuckerberg to win the World Technology Prize for software development and invented the Ethereum blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>At the DEC_TECH event, Buterin shared his \u201cLaunch Roadmap\u201d for the release of different components of the Ethereum project:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Frontier \u2013 soon! (we now know it\u2019s July 29\/30)<\/li>\n<li>Homestead \u2013 2 to 4 months<\/li>\n<li>Metropolis \u2013 4 to 8 months<\/li>\n<li>Serenity \u2013 6 to 12 months<\/li>\n<li>Virtual Machine upgrades \u2013 1 year, 2 months<\/li>\n<li>Scalability \u2013 2 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ethereum launch \u2013 how it will happen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The launch of Ethereum will take place late July 29 into early July 30, depending on what part of the world you\u2019re in.<\/p>\n<p>This will be the launch of the first component \u2013 \u201cFrontier\u201d \u2013 named after the American Wild West, where programmers will fight to survive in a relatively primitive and unexplored environment.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected any day now, but&nbsp;the Ethereum team, like NASA&nbsp;before a shuttle launch, has missed some expected launch dates to ensure that all systems were well tested and coordinated before hitting the \u201con\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Di Iorio, Ethereum co-founder,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ethereum.org\/2015\/06\/21\/ethereum-messaging-masses-including-fathers-via-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>&nbsp;that the Frontier stage, will be mainly for the developers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe majority of focus and current goal of Ethereum is to get the tools into the hands of developers and to show them how they can create the products end users will eventually value,\u201d he said. \u201cLess time and resources have been spent explaining Ethereum to end consumers, enterprises, and institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Bitcoin Magazine<\/em>&nbsp;asked Stephan Tual, chief communications officer for the Ethereum project, what kind of response they are expecting from developers on July 29\/30. He explained:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of users for Frontier, it\u2019s impossible to tell of course,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have 15K followers on Twitter, and receive about 100K page views on our website per month. Frontier is a very technical launch targeted at developers and we expect the user base to grow slowly from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ethereum.org\/2015\/07\/22\/frontier-is-coming-what-to-expect-and-how-to-prepare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog<\/a>, Tual explains why the Ethereum launch is not really a launch at all:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrontier is now feature complete and its codebase has been frozen for two weeks. As a team we are currently reviewing the final steps for the release, not all of them technical. There will be no countdown \u2013 Ethereum is not something that\u2019s centrally \u2018launched,\u2019 but instead emerges from consensus. Users will have to voluntarily download and run a specific version of the software, then manually generate and load the Genesis block to join the official project\u2019s network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ethereum Crowdfunding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Di Iorio was involved in the initial crowdfunding for Ethereum and told&nbsp;<em>Bitcoin Magazine&nbsp;<\/em>that at the time, in September 2014, it was the most successful crowd sale in history (over $18 million USD was raised). Now it is still the third most successful of any crowdfunding venture to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key with the crowdsale of ether was to make it available to as many people as possible and to build a global community,\u201d Di Iorio said. \u201cWe\u2019ve always been about inclusiveness and considered the project a community-led effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ether is the currency that goes with Ethereum, but unlike bitcoin, is not meant to be a general means of payment, but a specific funding device for the Ethereum project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ethereum has No Headquarters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although Toronto was the birthplace of Ethereum, it would be hard to say where the company\u2019s center is, and that\u2019s part of the plan to stay decentralized. There are members of the Ethereum team in Switzerland, London, Amsterdam, even Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>When Buterin was asked at DEC_TEC \u201cWhy do you do it?\u201d he said, \u201cTo make things better for people, simpler and easier to use.
