In fact, most developers<br \/> creating smart contracts use a different blockchain, like Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>But the truth is that the<br \/> Bitcoin protocol can be used to create smart contracts. <a href=\"https:\/\/particl.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Particl.io<\/a>, the blockchain eCommerce platform, is doing just<br \/> that by using Bitcoin-based smart contracts to manage funds in their trustless<br \/> escrow: Mutually Assured Destruction <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/articles\/particl-takes-mad-approach-escrows-maximizing-privacy\">(MAD) escrow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For Particl, Bitcoin provides<br \/> the ideal mix of smart contract functionality \u2014 enough to make smart contracts<br \/> easy to implement but without the security and privacy risks of a more<br \/> complicated platform like Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smart Contracts Overview<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A smart contract is an<br \/> agreement that can be enforced through a blockchain. Rather than relying on<br \/> trust or a legal framework to ensure that each party that enters into a<br \/> contract will adhere to its terms, you can use the blockchain to create a<br \/> contract that is automatically enforced, between two people, in a decentralized<br \/> fashion.<\/p>\n<p>Ethereum has become the most<br \/> popular blockchain for creating smart contracts. One of the major design goals<br \/> of the Ethereum platform was to support smart contracts. From the start, this<br \/> set Ethereum apart from Bitcoin, which was created first and foremost as a<br \/> digital currency platform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smart Contracts on Bitcoin Codebase<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the Bitcoin protocol has<br \/> evolved, it has gained support for smart contracts. Smart contract<br \/> functionality is not as programmable and extensible on Bitcoin as it is on<br \/> Ethereum. However, using features added to Bitcoin through improvement<br \/> proposals, certain smart contract functionality can be achieved through Bitcoin<br \/> scripting.<\/p>\n<p>For Particl, the most<br \/> important smart contract feature in Bitcoin is the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/bitcoin\/bips\/blob\/master\/bip-0065.mediawiki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY opcode<\/a>, which was introduced by Peter Todd as Bitcoin<br \/> Improvement Proposal (BIP) 65. The opcode makes it possible to write scripts<br \/> that prevent funds in a multi-signature wallet from being spent until a certain<br \/> signature pattern is implemented or a certain amount of time passes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Particl, Smart Contracts and MAD Escrow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MAD escrow is a technique<br \/> that effectively prevents fraud in a transaction without requiring the<br \/> oversight of a third party. In a MAD escrow contract, a buyer and seller both<br \/> place funds into escrow. The seller starts by depositing an amount they want<br \/> the buyer to match to symbolize a virtual handshake. This could be between 0<br \/> and 100 percent of the item\u2019s purchase price. The buyer then deposits an amount<br \/> equal to the handshake amount plus the price of the item they are buying. The<br \/> escrowed funds are not released to anyone until both parties confirm that the<br \/> transaction has been completed satisfactorily. The technique prevents either<br \/> party from profiting through cheating in a transaction.<\/p>\n<p>Particl uses the BIP 65<br \/> opcode to enable MAD escrow contracts by locking funds in a multi-signature<br \/> wallet until all of the parties sign off on the transaction. With this<br \/> approach, buyers and sellers on Particl\u2019s ecommerce platform can operate<br \/> without worrying about fraud or paying unnecessary fees.<\/p>\n<p>They also don\u2019t have to<br \/> sacrifice privacy because no third party is involved in the transaction.<br \/> Furthermore, and perhaps most significantly, because there is only basic<br \/> scripting involved, security concerns are minimal.<\/p>\n<p>Particl\u2019s approach to MAD<br \/> escrow smart contracts is arguably better than building smart contracts on a<br \/> platform like Ethereum. While Ethereum provides more extensible support for<br \/> smart contracts, that flexibility comes with a higher risk of security and<br \/> privacy threats. The more code that goes into a smart contract, the greater the<br \/> risk of introducing a vulnerability that could enable an intrusion.<\/p>\n<p>Ethereum might be a strong<br \/> foundation for writing very complex smart contracts, or ones in which security<br \/> and privacy are not priorities, but Bitcoin provides a simpler and more<br \/> reliable scripting framework for the private escrows that Particl requires.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contributing to Bitcoin\u2019s Future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Particl\u2019s choice of Bitcoin<br \/> as the backbone for its smart contracts is also a reflection of the team\u2019s efforts<br \/> to build a completely private platform on top of the Bitcoin codebase, arguably<br \/> the most secure, battle tested and contributed to protocol on the market.<\/p>\n<p>There are many dozens of<br \/> Bitcoin-based blockchain projects out there, but most are simply building<br \/> cryptocurrencies forked from Bitcoin. They\u2019re not taking advantage of Bitcoin\u2019s<br \/> potential to create the foundation for a completely decentralized platform that<br \/> supports a multitude of DApps and programmable functionality.<\/p>\n<p>In this<br \/> sense, Particl is helping to ensure that Bitcoin\u2019s future will evolve more than<br \/> just creating another cryptocurrency.
