After reaching out to <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.strike.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strike<\/a> founder <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jackmallers?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Mallers<\/a> and working with the Carolina Panthers front office,&nbsp;this is now a reality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pay me in Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; OKUNG \ud83d\udc06 (@RussellOkung) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RussellOkung\/status\/1128149326943834113?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 14, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Okung told <em>Bitcoin Magazine<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/articles\/the-nfls-russell-okung-wont-stop-until-hes-paid-in-bitcoin\">last September<\/a> that in a meeting with Ed McGuire, the Charger\u2019s executive vice president of football administration and player finance, he drew blank stares when bringing up bitcoin. \u201cI asked if they could pay me in bitcoin,\u201d he recalled. \u201cWith this stoic face he looked at me and said, \u2018What the hell is bitcoin?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With this announcement, Okung becomes the first professional athlete to receive bitcoin as payment for his labor on the field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For Okung, this is about taking power back. By getting paid in bitcoin, he now is able to reclaim \u201cpower that is rightly ours.\u201d He&#8217;s also put his time and energy into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitcoinis.com\/start\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin Is_<\/a>, a project meant \u201cto meet people where they are and unpack bitcoin in a really simple way,&#8221; he described to <em>Bitcoin Magazine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Mallers shared with the us that multiple athletes from the NBA, MLB and NFL are on board to get paid in bitcoin and they have even been contacted by several Billboard Top 500 artists about receiving part of their salaries in bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>This announcement goes beyond Okung and his team.
