{"id":17654,"date":"2021-02-18T16:50:54","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T16:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ci027cfe7af0052697"},"modified":"2025-01-30T12:50:06","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T12:50:06","slug":"taproot-activation-timeline-set-but-path-unclear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/taproot-activation-timeline-set-but-path-unclear","title":{"rendered":"Taproot Activation Timeline Set, But Path Unclear"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/taproot-is-coming-what-it-is.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier this week, Bitcoin\u2019s development community met via Internet Relay Chat (IRC) to discuss <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/articles\/taproot-coming-what-it-and-how-it-will-benefit-bitcoin\">Taproot<\/a> activation paths and lay out an expected timeline for the privacy and smart contract flexibility upgrade. This was the <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/articles\/bitcoin-developers-on-taproot-activation\">second such activation meeting<\/a> held through IRC.<\/p>\n<p>Though a tentative timeline was set, <a href=\"https:\/\/gnusha.org\/taproot-activation\/2021-02-16.log\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the meeting<\/a> ultimately left the group divided on a main issue: How exactly to coordinate the upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>According to an expected timeline posted after the meeting on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.bitcoin.it\/wiki\/Taproot_activation_proposal_202102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin Wiki<\/a>, Taproot could be activated by August 2022:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>March 17 to 31, 2021: Full node software released with Taproot activation deployment<\/li>\n<li>July 23, 2021: Economic majority has upgraded. Miner signalling begins to indicate preparedness to protect the economic minority who haven\u2019t upgraded yet.<\/li>\n<li>Two weeks after 90 percent of the Bitcoin network\u2019s hash rate signals support: Taproot activates. Economic majority enforces, while miners protect the economic minority until they upgrade as well.<\/li>\n<li>August 1, 2022: Entire economy has upgraded<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThere were two primary topics of conversation, the timeline and what to do if Taproot does not meet activation requirements,\u201d Ben Carman, a Bitcoin developer at <a href=\"https:\/\/suredbits.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suredbits<\/a>, told <em>Bitcoin Magazine<\/em>. Carman said that the room was divided on whether or not to proceed with a user-activated soft fork (UASF) if requirements are not met. \u201cAfter Core devs have experienced backlash and drama in the past few years, it seems they want to do the less controversial thing and not force the upgrade with a default UASF.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taproot is the biggest update to Bitcoin since SegWit back in 2017, and with it comes many potential benefits.
