{"id":17180,"date":"2021-04-05T19:20:56","date_gmt":"2021-04-05T19:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ci027fe1f240002558"},"modified":"2021-04-05T19:20:56","modified_gmt":"2021-04-05T19:20:56","slug":"bitcoins-kimchi-premium-hits-15-percent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/markets\/bitcoins-kimchi-premium-hits-15-percent","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin\u2019s \u201cKimchi Premium\u201d Hits 15 Percent"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>With TradingView reporting a <a href=\"https:\/\/in.tradingview.com\/symbols\/BTCUSD\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$57,000<\/a> BTC price for U.S.-based exchange Coinbase and a <a href=\"https:\/\/in.tradingview.com\/symbols\/BTCKRW\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$66,000<\/a> for South Korea\u2019s Bithumb at the time of this writing, the Kimchi premium, or difference between the bitcoin price on Western exchanges and South Korean exchanges, has reached 15 percent. <\/p>\n<p>With a name derived from the popular South Korean dish, the Kimchi premium was first identified in 2016, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/people.ucalgary.ca\/~alehar\/KimchiPremium26.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research report from the University of Calgary<\/a>. Though the current 15 percent premium is notable, the spread has been marked as high as 54.48 percent in January 2018, per the report.<\/p>\n<p>Although the price spread looks lucrative for foreign traders, local regulations limit foreigners from trading cryptocurrency through a South Korean exchange. Also, the regulations limit Korean traders from exploiting the arbitrage opportunities on international exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstitutional frictions prevent arbitrageurs from keeping bitcoin prices in Korea aligned with the rest of the world,\u201d the University of Calgary researchers explained. \u201cDivergence in bitcoin prices are not only a Korean phenomenon\u2026 international differences in bitcoin prices can be high and persist over long periods of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That being said, this premium reveals a bullish sentiment for bitcoin in the South Korean cryptocurrency market.
