{"id":17004,"date":"2021-04-15T13:35:29","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T13:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ci0280afce90002496"},"modified":"2021-04-15T13:35:29","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T13:35:29","slug":"speedy-trial-merged-into-bitcoin-core","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/speedy-trial-merged-into-bitcoin-core","title":{"rendered":"Speedy Trial Has Been Merged Into Bitcoin Core, Potentially Setting Path To Taproot Activation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/bitcoin\/bitcoin\/pull\/21377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GitHub pull request<\/a>, a BIP 9-based implementation of Speedy Trial has been merged with the code for Bitcoin Core, offering a potential path for activating the much-anticipated protocol upgrade Taproot.<\/p>\n<p>As the Bitcoin Core dev community has debated the best way of implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/taproot-coming-what-it-and-how-it-will-benefit-bitcoin\">Taproot<\/a>, which would add smart contract flexibility and privacy to Bitcoin, <a href=\"https:\/\/lists.linuxfoundation.org\/pipermail\/bitcoin-dev\/2021-March\/018583.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Speedy Trial<\/a> has emerged as a potential solution. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeedy Trial would give miners three months to signal support for the Taproot upgrade with their hash power,\u201d as Aaron van Wirdum and Sjors Provoost explained on <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/discussing-taproot-activation-through-speedy-trial\">a recent episode<\/a> of <em>Bitcoin Magazine<\/em>\u2019s \u201cVan Wirdum Sjorsnado\u201d podcast. \u201cIf a supermajority of miners signals support for the upgrade within these three months, Taproot will activate a couple of months later\u2026 If miners don\u2019t signal support within three months, the upgrade will expire and a new upgrade path can be considered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were two potential paths for getting Speedy Trial integrated into Bitcoin Core \u2014 through BIP 9 or through BIP 8, with <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/bip-8-bip-9-or-modern-soft-fork-activation-how-bitcoin-could-upgrade-next\">some notable differences between the two methods<\/a>. Bitcoin Developer Luke Dashjr, who has been <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/bitcoin-developers-on-taproot-activation\">active in community discussions<\/a> regarding Taproot activation, noted his dissent around this BIP 9-based implementation of Speedy Trial on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunity came to consensus on BIP 8,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LukeDashjr\/status\/1382528134910767104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a reply to a tweet sharing the GitHub pull request. \u201cThese devs are IGNORING that and pushing their own agenda instead.
